Also the fact that the crew of just one destroyer will outnumber the inhabitants considerably, and the islanders don't have the best history with the Royal Navy.

Population has little to do with it, if the island had big enough port facility's or if its in a strategic location, thats what I'd wonder.

Yip, they're in Singapore to ease logistics when operating with the Australians. No sense having the 13.5" guns at opposite ends of the Empire, is there?
