Following the completion of the H class DDL's the next class of Type A destroyers were planned to be slightly larger versions of the H class. Building of this class was orriginally projected for 1932/33 but was delayed till 1936, by which time the design grew considerably larger than first envisioned and ultimately changed to large flush decked design. This class is the first class of flush decked destroyers in the Atlantean navy. Originally to be named under "I" class, their names were changed to "Islands".
