Request of Tender - 1931 Scouting Forces Flagship

Two ships are envisaged to replace the ex-Atlantian battlecruisers.

Budget £22m total.
Must not exceed 30,000tons standard.
Must operate with scouting forces (+28knots)
Greek doctrine favours night fighting.
Use US calibre weapons (8, 10,12,14 etc.)

Designs can use tried and true technology (SIM 1929 & £24m budget (bonus for lower development costs)) new fangled stuff (SIM 1931 as above) like welding etc or bleeding edge (SIM 1933 but £18m budget)

Cheers,

She is heavily optimised for nightfighting, with a large number of smaller guns, a incremental armour scheme and high speed, she also got a fairly large torpedo battery.
Survivability and stability got higher priority then seakeeping, as the Mediterranean is relatively calm and in a short range battle steadiness is irrelevant.

If a more balanced ship is wanted, i also got a nice design with nine 30,5cm guns, much better armour and 30kts speed.

This one is actually based on a 1936 design I made. Only made a few minor changes (less AA, less range, bit more armor here, less armor there, Italian style CT... okay more than a few changes)

The Beardmore Company of Clydeside offers this design for the perusal of the Royal Hellenic Navy. It is closely based on a ship ordered by the Royal Navy for construction from 1931, and is considerably under-budget.

We feel that this ship offers the requisite speed and armament for operation with scouting forces. A large battery of 4.7"/45 calibre dual-purpose guns, presently close to being fully developed for the Royal Navy, is fitted, giving the ship excellent weight of fire against destroyers and aircraft. In the latter case, six octuple 2-pounder anti-aircraft guns make this an extremely difficult ship to attack.

Although the main armament is not especially heavy by the standards of capital ships, it is felt that six 12" guns offer more than adequate armament to counter cruisers, and that no scouting unit should endeavour to attack larger ships. The armour scheme, also, reflects this belief, and offers excellent protection against 8" shells.

A heavy torpedo battery has been provided, should the ship be obliged to engage larger vessels, and provision has been made for the carriage of four aircraft.

Finally, the vessel comes in significantly under-budget, meaning that, if desired, three might be purchased at little extra cost.

I hope that you might find this ship of some use. It would be my pleasure to arrange for redesign if you require modifications to be made.

55,000 horsepower per shaft? Might want to go to 4 shafts here, that's kind of high for 1931.

We´re talking about a 30000t warship here, those two vessels would be half the battleline of the greek fleet, I think even if they act as scouts they have to be well protected. I think the greeks should go for a fast BB instead of a classical BC.

So perhaps this is not the most handsome of all the vessels submitted, but I think this main battery layout has some advantages. Some points of interest:

- Very thick belt and turret armor. Also a more than adequate deck armor for a vessel this size.
- Only 30 knots, better internal subdivision and torpedo protection for increased survivability.
- Main battery without any superfiring turret, to increase stability.
- Maybe the range is a bit low, but this ship is more likely to operate in the Mediterranean sea, so I think it´s more than enough.

That's a nice one, Gravina... though its looks might be a bit... 'less' without the main gun superfiring turret.

Only 30 knots

More than enough as it has to be +28 knots.

Dropping the speed 1 knot I can make one of the turrets superfiring. Also I can get another half inch of deck armor, though I have to make the main belt shorther by several feet.

Preliminary design

Here's a quick 'Style ('Sharp is on the other computer; I'll run it through SS2 if it's short-listed...)

The Armada de Filipinas Design Office proposes the following design, based on our successful "Bohol" battlecruiser design.

Main armament is A, Bs, Y
Secondaries are Css, Xs, and two on each corner.
AA armament is four octuple pompoms and four of the new American quadruple 1.1-inch guns.
Torpedo tubes are in fixed broadside armoured mounts.
Cross-deck catapult between funnels, 3 aircraft.
Flag facilities.

The Bharatiya Nau Sena regrets that it will not be able to submit a proposal, out of respect to India's Turkish friends.

OOC: I like the Russian proposal's potential main gun commonality with your BBs, and she'll fit into a class three drydock. But additional speed, at the expense of some armor, might desireable to ensure a sufficient edge of speed over the most recent Italian BB.

Interesting to see all the torpedos on these designs.

Gibbs & Cox 1931BC-G

This design favors the ability to engage multiple targets over concentration of fire by using three twin turrets instead of two triples. Main armament is the standard U.S. 14"/50 and the design also carries the proposed twin 5" DP turret in eight mounts. Range is sufficient for a round trip voyage across the Mediterranean. The design also provides for at least four scout planes amidships. Deck armor is sacrificed somewhat, but will be less of a problem at the shorter ranges inherent in night actions or in the confined waters of the Aegean or Adriatic. High speed allows her to out run what she can't outfight, and her heavy guns will make short work of cruisers or other fast units.

(I'll try and work up a drawing over the weekend)
