Diplomatic Relations

The State of Diplomatic Relations, 1/1/1930

Who’s Hot: Germany
Who’s Not: Australia, UK

In alphabetical order:

Atlantis: Fair (1927 rating: neutral). There have been no obvious sources of conflict in the past while.

Australia: Poor (1927 rating: unrated). Initial hopes for a good relationship were dashed as a result of Cleito Treaty negotiations and Australia’s commitment to defend its former masters’ enclaves in the Pacific.

Chile: Neutral (1927 rating: indifferent). India’s earlier skepticism about the Chilean pirate problem has faded in the light of the Arcadia Incident.

China: Fair (1927 rating: neutral to fair). The apparent success of Chiang Kai-Shek in unifying China and deposing the warlords provides some hope of long-term stability to India’s neighbour.

Chosen: Ally, through SATSUMA (1927: Ally). Not much of an active relationship outside military exercises.

Denmark: Neutral (1927 rating: neutral). The Danes have been quiet of late, which is never a bad thing as far as Europeans in Asia is concerned.

Formosa: Ally, through SATSUMA (1927: Ally). Frequent BNS usage of Formosan ports during the Filipino Revolution was mutually beneficial.

France: Fair (1927 rating: neutral). Recent French statements about the future of their colonies, and the change in stance regarding the Palawan accident have been positive.

Germany: Good (1927 rating: neutral to friendly). The historical relationship disrupted by the Great War seems to be on the mend, as business and diplomatic initiatives start to pay off.

Greece: Neutral (1927: neutral). A nation India has little opportunity to interact with.

Iberia: Neutral (1927: indifferent to cool). Another European power that has been quiet in recent years, its acceptance of the Paracels as a mandate did help avert a conflict between the Philippines and Chile.

India: Good. Public opposition to Indian involvement in the Philippines was unprecedented, but still civil and legal.

Italy: Neutral (1927: same). India remains somewhat leery of the Mediterranean power though acknowledges its colonial legacy is not so bad as some of its neighbours’.

Japan: Ally, through SATSUMA (1927: same). The degree of cooperation has never been higher than during and after the Filipino revolution.

Netherlands: Poor (1927: neutral to poor). A nation greatly mis-trusted by India, and the attitudes presented by the Dutch delegation at Copenhagen did nothing to change this.
Nordmark: Neutral (1927: indifferent to neutral). Though the two only really share a bond through South Africa, there has been more diplomatic interaction between them in the past year.

Philippines: Ally, through SATSUMA (1927: same). The losses sustained by India during the Filipino revolution mean that the Raj and his advisors will be keeping a close eye on the reconstruction efforts of their ally.

Poland: Neutral to Fair (1927: unrated). A new source of potential business opportunities.

Russia: Fair (1927: neutral). Collaboration on an Asian railway project has helped thaw this relationship.

Saudi Arabia: Poor (1927: same). The two continue to trade barbs and look for opportunities to spite each other.

Siam: Neutral to Fair (1927: neutral). Siam’s new leadership has thus far proven itself to be reasonable.

South Africa: Ally, through SAINT (1927: same). India’s involvement in SATSUMA continues to be a source of some friction, but relations are generally good and trade continues to rise.

Turkey: Fair (1927: neutral). Continued relationship-building has included joint political conferences and the construction of a battleship in India for Turkey.

UK: Cool (1927: neutral). The old colonial power’s recent agreement with AANM and its decision to reinforce its assets in Asia were viewed with considerable alarm.

USA: Fair (1927: Neutral). It is perceived that the USA is opposed to colonialism, and the two nations have had military interaction as a result of recent naval exercises and the presence of American observers in the Filipino Revolution.

Yemen: Poor (1927: poor). The backwards little nation remains adamantly against Indian involvement in Asir.

(Yugoslavia, Romania, Brazil, Persia coming into play too late to be effectively determined at this time; wait for the 1931 synopsis)

The State of Diplomatic Relations, 1/4/1932

The Scale:

Ally (Good, with formal military ties added in)

Good (A friend)

Fair (The nation is generally viewed in positive terms)

Neutral (Either the nation does good and bad things that cancel out, or there's just not enough interaction to amount to anything)

Poor (An adversarial but generally non-violent relationship)

Hostile (An adversarial and violent relationship)

Who’s Hot:
China, Turkey
Who’s Not: Saudi Arabia, Yemen

In alphabetical order:

Argentina: Neutral (1930: Un-rated). Fences seem to be mending with our SAE friends, but those FUM guys are a problem.

Atlantis: Fair (1930 rating: Fair). Even our allies haven't managed to piss each other much lately.

Australia: Neutral (1930 rating: Poor). No real relationship exists with Australia.

Brazil: Neutral (1930: Un-rated). Not much interaction, but there's always a question of whether they and the SAE are going to have at it.

Canada: Neutral (1930 rating: Un-rated). Again, not much interaction, though they and the Aussies do earn a wee bit of credit for fighting piracy.

Chile: Neutral (1930 rating: Neutral). Another relationship that is benign but minimal.

China: Ally, through SATSUMA (1930 rating: Fair). China shared issues in common with India and other Asian nations, so its joining of SATSUMA was logical enough.

Chosen: Ally, through SATSUMA (1930 rating: Ally). A quiet but reliable ally, with slowly growing trade connections.

Denmark: Fair (1930 rating: neutral). Denmark's plan to gradually reduce its presence in Siam is viewed positively.

Formosa: Ally, through SATSUMA (1930: Ally). Trade links are increasing with this small but respected ally.

France: Fair to Good (1930 rating: Fair). French help with El Derretir was well received, and there are rumors of back-room discussions.

Germany: Good (1930 rating: Good). A long-time friend that has come through for India.

Greece: Neutral (1930: Neutral). Never likely to get any better given India's friendship with Turkey.

Iberia: Neutral (1930: Neutral). Hainan does present a complication now that China is an ally, but there is no direct cause for problems.

India: Fair. El Derretir has caused casualties and some civil disturbances, plus the first mutiny in the military in over a century.

Italy: Neutral to Poor (1930: Neutral). The Ethiopian CV business did not please India.

Japan: Ally, through SATSUMA (1930: same). Good friends, though they can be a little too enthusiastic about helping at times (e.g. dropping diseases on enemy states).

Mexico: Neutral to Fair (1930: Un-rated). A few deals have taken place, but contact has otherwise been minimal.

Netherlands: Poor (1930: Poor). While there is increased respect for the Dutch queen, the government's arms sales to Yemen and Saudi Arabia did not bring smiles to Indian faces.

Nordmark: Fair (1930: Neutral). A bit of shared military exercising helped, as has the less hardline approach to Argentina, which got the shaft in 1921.

Persia: Ally, through SATSUMA (1930: Un-rated). Sure, they're quiet apart from when they bump shoulders with other small states nearby, but it's good to have a friend in the Persian Gulf.

Peru: Fair (1930: Un-rated). Some commercial links are developing, particularly with the sale of the ex-Babur.

Philippines: Ally, through SATSUMA (1930: same). The fact that El Derretir sprang from the same place that brought the world the Filipino Revolution has not gone unnoticed in Indian society. Still, the governments are on good terms.

Poland: Neutral (1930: Neutral to Fair). Little interaction to speak of, besides a few failed attempts to sell them warships.

Rumania: Neutral (1930: Un-rated). The two nations have probably only met during cocktail parties on embassy row.

Russia: Fair (1930: Fair). A lack of squabbles with India's allies doesn't hurt.

Saudi Arabia: Hostile (1930: Poor). Twelve years of tension, accusation, and skirmishing around Asir has finally boiled over.

Siam: Fair (1930: Neutral to Fair). Siam's been generally supportive of Indian activities lately, and it's encouraging to see them become more independent, even if they are adding significantly to their navy.

South Africa: Ally, through SAINT (1930: same). Another long friend, cooperating at Diego Garcia and helping elsewhere when requested.

Turkey: Good (1930: Fair). Military exercises and sales, and shared concerns over Asir have forged a closer relationship.

UK: Neutral (1930: ~Neutral to Poor). Olde England and company seem to recognize Indian security concerns, and have been more supportive of India in Asir than would have been expected.

USA: Fair (1930: Fair). The SATSUMA exercises were a good get-together, but trade links could be expanded.

Yemen: Hostile (1930: Poor). Whether they're actively allied to Saudi Arabia or just joining in is unclear, but they too have taken to arms over Asir.

Yugoslavia: Neutral (1930: Un-rated). Well, they beat our football team 3-1 a couple years back...
