off topic but...

What kind of music do you all listen too? I'm curious to see what bands are popular in Europe as opposed to here in North America.

Music

An interesting question, thought.

First let me point out that Peng is _not_ representative for the average european young male. :o) The kind of music he likes to listen to is quite special, at least in central (old?) Europe...

So what about me? I´m also a little bit off mainstream but not as far as Peng, though, because I like it hard´n´heavy - at least most of the time. ;o)
On the other hand, now thinking about it, I can´t really say I favour a certain type of music and it also changes from time to time.

My all-time favourites (bands):

High above all: NIGHTWISH
(A finnish dark metal band and you´ll not be able to find something similar on this planet. Their stuff is very melodic, if not bombastic, and their female singer has a trained (opera) voice. Most favoured songs are "Dead Boy´s Poem", "Sleeping Sun" and "Tenth Man Down".)

K´s CHOICE
(A belgian band with a very special sound. They´re not famous but also not unknown to people who like alternative rock. Sometimes soft, sometimes harder K´s Choise offers very different styles. Try "Elegia", "Iron Flower" and "Mr. Freeze".)

FURY IN THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE
(A german combo which became famous with their songs "Radio Orchid" and "Time To Wonder". They had some ups and downs but in general they make very interesting and melodic music. Also try "Won´t Forget These Days" or "Angels & Saints" to get an idea what I´m talking about.)

MIKE OLDFIELD
(There´s little one has to say. He´s well known. Try "To France", "The Millenium Bell" or "Far Above The Clouds".)

NEIL YOUNG
(Another great songwrite. Famous and most liked songs are "Keep On Rockin In A Free World", "Horse With No Name" and "My My Hey Hey".)

PHIL COLLINS/GENESIS
(You all know that man and his most famous band, though. I like especially "No Son Of Mine", "Against All Odds", "Can´t Stop Loving You" and "Both Sides Of The Story".)

DIRE STRAITS/MARK KNOPFLER
(Anybody not listening to "Brothers In Arms" or "What It is"?)

POLICE/STING
(That man is astonishing. One of the greatest songwriters of all times. His arrangements belong to the most comlicated and most inspiring in modern pop music. There´s hardly a single song I can name that stands atop others.)

Another with a wide range

In a military vein, the Red Army Chorus is pretty good, or Prokofiev's "Aleksandr Nevskii", (A i bylo delo na Nevye rekye...).

For lighter stuff, well, I'm listening to a "Summertime, Summertime" by the Jamies right now, 'cause I'm in a nostalgic mood:

http://hfradio.org/k1oik/files/The!Jamie…!Summertime.mp3

I'll second the opinions of Sting, Dire Straits, Spandau Ballet, and a number of others...

Then there's Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers, and "Ulysses" and "L'Orfeo" and a bunch of his other choral stuff.

And Sarastro starting up "O Isis und Osiris... in "Die Zauberflote" is powerful.

And you can always get me listening to catches and madrigals from Elizabethan England, in fact, the tune by The Jamies sounds somewhat like one.

I also could go on

wow

Preaty deverse musical taste in the group. Hoo I never pictured you liking Iron Maiden.....I have every album they have made and most of their best of and live albums. Currently I'm into a band called Lacuna Coil, they are from Italy of all places. Other favorite Bands are The Gathering ( I think they are Dutch) Filter, some Korn, Alice in Chains, Queens of the stone age, Audio slave and Evanesence. I also don't mind techno and the odd movie score soundtrack.

;o)

Lacuna Coil, The Gathering, Queens of the Stoneage ("Go with the flow"), Alice in Chains etc. are also known to me of course but I won´t rate them among my favourites. Same for IRON SURVIVOR or SINERGY.

What I really forgot is QUEEN, especially their Highlander OST but also many other songs. Too bad Freddie died so early.... A pity. :o(

Anyway, NIGHTWISH stands high above all.

Yes, I'm connecting every couple of nights to the internet, but the connection is only 14.4 kbps, and I have to use the hotel's main line to do so. So my posts will continue to be limited...

My musical preferences take most people by surprise since I seem like such a mellow, nice guy:

Alice Cooper: newer stuff such as Dragontown

Rob Zombie: Hellbilly Deluxe

Ministry: Psalm 69

Static-X: Wisconsin Death Trip

Dracula 2000 soundtrack

Def Leppard: Retroactive, Slang

In general then, very loud and annoying music...
