Philomedes/Emathion, Atlantis Battleship laid down 1931, refitted in 1945

These are essentially Improved Memnon class battleships. The aft floatplane hangar has been deleted as per modifications to be made in the Memnons and the 3" guns have been replaced with 4.5" DP mounts. In addition minor armor changes and a transom stern have been introduced. In 1945 both ships began refits to improve electronics, habitability, survivability and AA capabilities.

Memnon class battleships

Memnon, Eumelos (ex-Philomedes, renamed on the slip)

In 1935 Eumelos was involved with a collision with the Destroyer Dent which resulted in minor damage to her bow. As a result of the need to enter drydock for repairs the decision was made to improve the ships anti-air capability's in addition to adding unique equipment.

All of the ships twin 3", 40mm Mk 1 and 20mm triple mounts will be removed and replaced by eight twin 3.95"(100mm) DP mounts, ten 40mm Mk2 mounts, eight quad 20mm mounts and four twin 12.7mm mounts. New funnel caps and other minor esthetic changes were also made.

Memnon began a refit to undertake similar changes to her sister at the begining of 1940.
