Morning of October 17, 1928
President Juan Diego de la Vega watches as the lines are tossed to the Filipinos running along the Davao quay. The first non-Filipino SATSUMA ship had arrived.
Diego had heard that the Indian Prince-Regent Brashkar made a speech yesterday regarding their actions to be taken with this rebellion in the Philippines. Chosen and Formosa had done the same, trying to figure out exactly what could be done under the circumstances. However, there had been no word from Japan yet and despite that the first ship to arrive was Japanese.
It was not just any ship. The Mikasa was the oldest active ship in the Japanese Navy. It was also the flagship of Admiral Togo Heihachiro during the Ruso-Japan War, more than 20 years ago. These days the captain of the ship was Togo Ryoko, granddaughter of Admiral Togo.
Diego smiled. How nice it was that a pretty señorita was arriving here in Davao. It would be good for the morale of the men here, considering what had happened in the last few weeks.
With a thud, the Mikasa's gangway hit the Davao quay. There was all kinds of activities aboard the ship. A small group of armed marines disembarked the ship and took their positions on several points on the quay. Finally he saw the captain on deck.
It wasn't hard to recognize her. She was the only woman aboard and her uniform, made by the infamous clothes designer Nyouh-Fah Shohn, made her stand out even more among the white-dressed crew. She was accompanied by two men, who both stood out since neither of them wore a uniform. One wore a samurai armor which probably would have been of some use to someone in Japan, 400 years ago. He might probably be of some other branch of the Japanese Military. The other man wore a long coat over ordinary looking clothes, probably a civilian.
As the three made their way down the gangway, Diego walked forward to welcome the Mikasa's captain to the Philippines.
"Welcome to the Philippines," Diego said as the three stepped onto the quay.
"Why thank you, mr. President," the armor wearing man replied with a broad smile. "We weren't expecting anyone important welcoming us here."
"To be honest, we weren't expecting any Japanese warships yet, señor..."
"Sanada," the man told. "Marshal Sanada Yukimura. Imperial Japanese Armed Forces Commander."
Diego had heard of the name during a briefing some time ago. Yukimura stood at the head of all the military forces in and outside Japan, right below the Shogun in the chain of command. "So Japan decided to take action?" Diego asked. "I haven't heard anything yet."
"Her Ladyship should make an announcement one of these days. After all, you sent all other SATSUMA nations a letter, asking for assistance... or so I have heard."
"So you're arriving ahead of schedule."
"Perhaps..." Yukimura motions to Ryoko. "I assume you know my wife, Rio-chan."
"Ryoko!" Ryoko corrected aggitated. "Why can't you use my name normally in public?"
"Because it fits you so nicely, Rio-chan." Yukimura laughed slightly. He then pointed at the other man. "My friend, General Saika Magoichi, head of the Imperial Infantry."
"General?" Diego looked surprised at the man. He surely didn't dress like one. "Without a uniform, one would hardly recognize you as one, General Saika."
Magoichi held up his hands. "Uniforms are just not me. This is." He motions down at his clothes. "I have a special arangement with Yuki here..." Magoichi slapped Yukimura hard on the back. "... that I can wear this."
"But it is true. A general who isn't himself, isn't a general," Yukimura pointed out. "A true general has to be able to recognize himself when he looks into the mirror and sees his reflection."
"By the way, Diego, where are the Senoritas?" Magoichi asked with a grin. "To be honest, I had hoped there would be a few of them to welcome us with open arms at our arrival here in the Philippines."
Diego stared at Magoichi. He wasn't expecting a question like that. "T... There is a war going on, general."
"Aw shoot... and nobody told me! What a shame. If I knew that, I would have taken the infantry along... as well as some ladies. They find me hard to resist."
"By the way, Diego, where do you store the Sake?" Yukimura asked with a smile.
"There is a war going on, Marshal. We did not have any time to get any. If we knew you were coming, we would certainly have tried to arrange something."
"What a shame but that was to be expected." Yukimura shrugs. "Guess we'd better go home then."
"B... but you just got here!"
"Can't think without Sake." Yukimura looked at Ryoko. "I hope you took some along Rio-chan."
"Don't worry, I did... and stop calling me Rio-chan!" Ryoko snapped.
"Excellent. Guess we can start making plans as to how we should take out the enemy swiftly and efficiently."
"How about chasing the Senoritas a bit first, Yuki?" Magoichi asked. "There must be some around here!"
"Well, I need a drink first," Yukimura pointed out.
"I'm going to call in sick, boys..." Ryoko turns around and walked back up the gangway.
"Hey babe! Don't leave because of us!" Magoichi called out to Ryoko.
"Mago... I don't like it when you refer to my wife as 'babe'..." Yukimura told a bit annoyed.
"Sorry, Yuki... bad habit of mine."
Both men started to laugh. Diego groaned and was beginning to have some doubts about these two high-ranking Japanese officers. One appeared to be a womanizer and the other an alcoholic.
How were they ever going to win this war with the Revolutionaries with allies like these?
