Old Battleships

The first Battleship Maine was sunk in 1898 in Havana Harbor through unknown causes. At the time the United States claimed Iberian agents had planted a mine underneath her, but as a result of the peace treaty ending the Iberian-American War the U.S. withdrew that claim officially. The Battleship Pennsylvania was the former Russian Battleship Retvizan, purchased in 1899 while under construction in Philadelphia. The Texas, Indianas, Iowa, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania were renamed Coast Defense Battleship 1-7 in 1914 to free their names for new construction. The Battleships Idaho and Mississippi were sold to Mexico and China prior to the World War. All of the Pre-Dreadnought designs were scrapped at the end of the War as a result of the Cleito Treaty, as were the South Carolinas, the Delewares, the Floridas, and the Wyoming. The Arkansas was converted to a target ship and remains in service. The designs prior to the Connecticut would have likely been scrapped regardless of the treaty, while the Connecticuts may have been modernized and used for coast defense.
