Sloop Conversion

I can't remember who got this thought running around my head, whover it was ....thanks!

Well, does she sink or swim?
She is a rebuild of the D1 class destroyer ( in the encyclopedia section)

Main: 0.98" / 25 mm - -
2nd: 0.59" / 15 mm - -
3rd: 0.59" / 15 mm - -

- Armour deck: 0.50" / 13 mm, Conning tower: 0.98" / 25 mm

Machinery:
Oil fired boilers, steam turbines,
Direct drive, 2 shafts, 10,879 shp / 8,116 Kw = 24.00 kts

Fuel, ammunition & stores: 237 tons, 17.3 %
Miscellaneous weights: 75 tons, 5.5 %

Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
1,400 lbs / 635 Kg = 20.9 x 5.1 " / 130 mm shells or 0.6 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1.01
Metacentric height 0.8 ft / 0.3 m
Roll period: 13.7 seconds
Steadiness - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 71 %
- Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0.98
Seaboat quality (Average = 1.00): 1.20

Hull form characteristics:
Hull has rise forward of midbreak
Block coefficient: 0.493
Length to Beam Ratio: 9.00 : 1
'Natural speed' for length: 16.43 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 62 %
Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 59
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): 25.00 degrees
Stern overhang: 2.00 ft / 0.61 m
Freeboard (% = measuring location as a percentage of overall length):
- Stem: 18.00 ft / 5.49 m
- Forecastle (20 %): 16.00 ft / 4.88 m
- Mid (55 %): 16.00 ft / 4.88 m (8.00 ft / 2.44 m aft of break)
- Quarterdeck (15 %): 8.00 ft / 2.44 m
- Stern: 8.00 ft / 2.44 m
- Average freeboard: 12.56 ft / 3.83 m
Ship tends to be wet forward

Ship space, strength and comments:
Space - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 107.9 %
- Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 112.3 %
Waterplane Area: 5,364 Square feet or 498 Square metres
Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 115 %
Structure weight / hull surface area: 53 lbs/sq ft or 260 Kg/sq metre
Hull strength (Relative):
- Cross-sectional: 0.87
- Longitudinal: 3.33
- Overall: 1.00
Hull space for machinery, storage, compartmentation is adequate
Room for accommodation and workspaces is adequate
Ship has slow, easy roll, a good, steady gun platform

ASW Weaponry = 60 depth charges - 2 rails and 4 launchers

P.S. would she benefit from the .50 hull strenght rule, or is she too slow?

hull strength

I think the minimum speed for the 0.5 hull strength is 27 knots.

I think she's a little short ranged for convoy escort operations in the Pacific.

The limit for hull strength below 1.00 is 24.01 knots...

I think you were inspired by Rocky's DD-to-SL conversions. ;-)

I would call 4x130mm overkill for a sloop, but otherwise she looks good to me.

I see her principally as a convoy escort vessel, so I see the guns as helping to deter all but the most determined attacker (at one stage I was toying with the idea of 6 guns!!)

. I'll see what i can do about the range.

Thanks Rocky!
You may have given the older girls in the fleet a new lease on life!

It is >24 knots so 24.0000000001 knots would be correct as well, but in SS it would give you 24.00 rounded down so for something visible over 24 knots, it should be 24.01 like Swamphen said.

Deck space would be a problem. Go to twin mounts for the 130mm guns. Loose the armour and carry more shells.

... makes me wonder why those older Danish DDs (No's 1 thru 12) are armored in the first place...

8

Saturday, September 10th 2005, 4:19pm

Or why they have 4", 4.5", 120mm, 4.75" and 130mm guns?

9

Saturday, September 10th 2005, 4:28pm

Probably one reason why this sloop conversion changes main guns from 4 inch to 130mm, thus attempting to retire the 4 inch gun. That means Denmark would be left with 4.5", 120mm, 4.75" and 130mm (but still a few too many types of calibers).

Always trying to help a sometimes-rival in need.

I'd second RA's comments. Deck space will be a definite issue for you.

As an aside, you're not constrained by the treaty. Why not leave a torpedo carriage aboard?

It's a pretty big destroyer for 1908, but whatcha gonna do...

an issue best described as.....

"Ahh, the ignorance of youth, back in the day when I hadn't a clue!!!!"
She is kind of provisional at the moment, until I do out a drawing to see hoe everything sits....

As for the Torps, with The King's wish to eventually sign the treaty, it wouldn't make much sense, and I see her operating in convoys with a DD as convoy leader, which will have torps.

Why not build a wooden superstructure over it to hide it?
