Destroyer Armament

What calibre guns are you guys arming your destroyers with?
The British were using 4.7" guns firing 50lb shells with 4 guns.
Italy will probably use 4" guns firing 38lb shells. The 4" fires quicker and more guns can be mounted.

well

Right now I'm using 4" guns on my DD's but I will soon make the jump to 4.5". Like my cruisers my DD force needs to be modernized somewhat as the bulk of the DD's are early WW1 designs and are nearing the 10 year mark in age.

I'm currently using single-mounted 4.1" (105 mm) guns. A dual 4.1" mount will be tested on the new monitor and may see service later.

The Ordnance Bureau is starting to tinker with 4.9" (125 mm) weapons, but those are unlikely to see service before the late twenties.

Destroyer armament

Russian Federation has adopted 130mm (5.1") in single mounts for Tashkent class, and for subsequent classes. Shell weight is 37 kg (81.5 lb)

France has adopted the 120mm (4.7") in single mounts for the Audaciaux class, and for subsequent classes. Shell weight is 28kg (62 lb)

Greek destroyer armament

Greek navy uses the 76.2mm on pre WW1 destroyers and 105mm on more recent constructions.

Eventually the 76.2 mm on destroyers will be phased out as older ships head for overhaul, in all likelihood they too will have their armament standardised on the 105mm calibre.

The general purpose 76.2mm high angle mount will be retained only for mine sweepers torpedo boats and other light forces.

In the 1930's a new armament will be introduced for destroyers, I have not yet decide exactly what calibre this is going to be.

Originally, I simmed the Japanese Destroyers with 4 inch (102mm) guns, but when I adjusted the L:B ratio of them, I also decided to stick to the 4.7 inch (120mm) guns on the Destroyers, which Japanese Destroyers had historically during that time (at least the larger ones). The 3rd class Ki Ichi class was originally simmed with a 3 inch gun (76mm, which seemed to be the caliber of the 12 pounder those smaller Japanese DDs carried), but after L:B adjustment, they now carry 3.15 inch (80mm) guns

The future Japanese 3rd Class Destroyers will probably be armed with 3.9 inch (100mm) guns, Japanese 2nd Class Destroyers will also be armed with 4.7 inch guns, and Japanese 1st Class Destroyers will be armed with 5.1 inch (130mm) guns.

So what differs between the three classes of Japanese destroyers apart from gun size? Hull size, mission?

Weight.

Looking at Jane's Fighting Ships of WW 1, 3rd class would be <600 tons, 2nd class 600-1000 tons, 1st class >1000.

I use it slighly different. 3rd class is the same with ships <600 tons. 2nd class destroyers are Category B destroyers (600-1600 tons) and 1st class destroyers are Category A destroyers (1600-2000 tons).

The older Nordmark destroyers carry 4.3inch (11cm) guns, while the latest class is fitting out with 5.1inch (13cm) guns. Twin HA/LA mounts are being developed for both the 5.1inch guns and the 4.3inch guns; the latter mounts are intended as the AA for heavy ships.
