The Australian times cost 1D 3/3/1921

In a shock announceed today the australian goverment announced the sale of surplus Queen Elizabeth class 15"MK 1B 45cal guns and turrets to a non commonwealth nation. The goverment spokesman added that he could not disclose who the buyer is nor the number of units purchased because of contract obligations . This repoter went looking for him self around the yrads and found out that all 8 sets 15" Mk1B guns and turrets are indeed missing . where did they go thats the big question on everyones lips as to where they gone one man thougth they could be on there way to Japan as part of some deal all so it was noted at the time 50,000, 1950 pound shells where all so loaded on the ship that took the guns .

Uh....

5o.ooo ?!? Who needs so many shells ?!?!

Typically a BB carried about 80-100 shells per main gun. Thus a QE would have ~800 of them. So with 5o.ooo shells one gets 62,5x a QEs payload. Heck, that´s more than the RN ever had for their fleet I´m pretty sure. Two or three "refills" per shit were stored typically...

So who needs either so many refills or has so many (~20) 15" BBs/BCs ?!?!

Perhaps some detective work is needed for this. Perhaps we should make a list of all the 'suspects' and their motives. :-)

The Conspiracy Observation Group, a private think-tank based in Columbo, has concluded that Australia has sold the guns and ammunition to its greatest perceived threat and rival - Japan.

Why? For Australia, talking the Japanese into re-arming two battleships would take them out of service for awhile, and even afterward, the guns might conceivably be fixed so they don't work against Australian targets. Afterward, the Australian navy only needs to point to newly re-armed 15" Japanese battleships to justify getting 15" battleships of its own.

Japan's current BB designs have 14" guns either in duple or triple turrets. They would have to do a lot of cutting to rearm the ships with 15" guns. But for the future who know's?

It would be more sensible to assume that the guns are going to Greece. Harry has said he needs guns and they are on order from Britain. Australia being a commonwealth nation may meen that British manufacturers have put contract work to Australia in this regard.

Hey, present us with a "shocking announcement" and you'll get speculation. I see no reason for all of that speculation to make sense.

The Conspiracy Observation Group is consistently proven wrong when they make public accusations - although their interpretation is that they were right, so the conspirators (Australia, in this case), changed their plans to make the COG look bad.

On a more serious note, the Indian government would probably have the same assessment of the situation as Red Admiral, assuming any kind of public statement was made on the matter. Indian forces at Al-Salif will be sure to watch for heavily loaded Australian freighters (50,000 tons of shells + 8 turrets = multiple ships) heading for the Suez Canal.

Perhaps some British Battleships sailed toward Australia with fake 15" turrets and are heading home with the real ones. Who would suspect a warship to transport those guns as part of its own armament ?
Maybe Australia takes a risk and send the guns along the much longer Eastern route through the Panama Canal.
Perhaps in Japan, the guns are moved from the Australian ships to ships from another nation and moved to their final destination from there.

Of course the Bakufu will deny everything.

You're right about Japan's guns, Red Admiral. They are all 14 inch at the moment (except for the Kaga class which was to be equipped with 16.1 inch guns, but are now being converted to carriers). However plans are being made to redesign the blueprints for the Kii class Battleships and they will be armed with 15 inch guns. The question would be when they will lay down these ships.

or like i side that last part of the story on the shells could be to beef up the story

Or it could have been an error. Perhaps on the forms there was a '0' too many. Someone saw that form and noticed the total of 50,000 (which would have been 5,0000). He told it to someone else who told it to a few of his buddies and they told it to their friends etc.

In that case, the man responsible for that typo should be sent to Nordmark where he can join the group of Nordmark secretaries assigned to moss sampling duties on Spitsbergen (I believe; Pengolodh would know that better than me).

Eh!?!?

"50,000 (which would have been 5,0000)."

Eh, Walter, what exactly do you mean....?

13

Tuesday, July 8th 2003, 8:52pm

Well, if you have fifty thousand, you have 50.000 or as them other people would write 50,000 :-). If you were to type five thousand, you'd write 5.000 (or 5,000).
If an error was made typing, you would read it as 50,000 but it would be typed as 5,0000 (5,000 plus the additional 0).

It would have been better if I typed "Someone quickly read that form and noticed the total of 50,000 (which was actually typed as 5,0000)."

Sorry if it wasn't clear.
