Saigon Sentinel - 9 May 1927

Engineers have managed to raise the forward section of the cruiser Palawan for examination by French and Filippino investigators tasked with discovering the cause of the explosion aboard Palawan. This reporter was on the scene as the section was raised. The jagged metal on the edge of the broken hull bottom appeared bent outward, suggesting to this reporter's untrained eye that the explosion originated inside Palawan. This was later confirmed to me by the Chairman of the investigating committee, Adrian Moncey. "Our preliminary results indeed point to an internal explosion, and given the location of the detonation, some mistake in the storage or handling of her propellant charges appears to be the most likely cause."
