Remind me what the names "Tyr" and "Vali" are derived from? Just wondering.

Tyr is a Norse God of War.... Vali I don´t know....

I was looking for names for gods for my major vessels, and his sounded good (and more pronouncable than most!)!

It's a case of finding appropriate names for the class of ship in question.

Thanks to that site I have a few Basque names to use such as Aatxe , an evil spirit in the form of a Bull who at night, espeacially durring stormy weather emerges from his cave. How about Eate the god of fire and storms?

Why not? If very few people know who you are referring to, then they would not know the ship is named after such a Goddess.
Still, regarding "Healing", it would be an name perfect for a Hospital Ship.
As for Aphrodite, Wes, It would have to be quite a beautiful warship to be worthy of such a name.

I'm sure the SAE and Italy are aiming for just such a thing.

Aphrodite probably is not the perfect name for a battleship but for a cruiser of some beauty....

In general names are an interesting field of investigation. And we will most likely see warships of different navies with identical name - at least as long as some of us (including myself) are using Greek and Norse mythology for inspiration.

Greek names tend to be the favorites, I suppose Roger will have to patent some of those names!!

I'm using Greek Gods for subs and have Aphrodite slated for S-31. I've tended to use Greeklish for names. If I used the modern Greek spelling and alphabet then I would even know what the ships were - just lots of squiggles.

Patents? No, I'll just invoice for un-paid royalties. We can settle out of court. ; )

Still, I'd be amused if Italy or Turkeywere to name a bunch of ships after the Greek pantheon, so long as the ship's nature contradicted the original name. For example, a slow, squat monitor named Aphrodite, or a hospital ship named for the god of war.

I have quite a few Turkish names to use, do you have any idea how many Sultans they have had?!!

I would think Italy might use the Roman names rather than the Greek names, even if there are roughly the same gods. Turkey could do this as well, but only if they wanted to explore the Byzantium Era and the early Eastern Roman Empire period.

I have enough names. Just reusing the historical names of other ships. I have a nice website with just about every Italian warship ever, only ~ 150years of history though.

I could not in all good conscience use names from an alien pantheon, when I had a perfectly good pantheon of "my own" to use........... that and the E 40.00 Danish / English dictionary I splashed out on!!

I use mostly historical (with a few made up) military names for the destroyers, battleships, and some older cruisers.

The new cruisers and carriers after the Hyatt are named after mountains, providences and native tribes are tribal heros/leaders.

The predreads have be renamed to there original names before the British bought them historically to prevent a possible sale to Russia. I suppose these ships did the same, but Chile decided to buy them back at somepoint, as they are refered to as ex-Swiftsure and ex-Thriumph still.

And a future dreadnought currently have the original name for what was HMS Canada , for a time. A hint, I have a naval base there now.
