Why do I feel we'll be see-ing more Expedia maps in future!

The trick, of course, will be figuring out the scale and drawing the circles...

AdmK - Looking forwards to seeing more of these babies. :-)

The scale

This is greatly assisted by recalling that each minute of latitude is a nautical mile, so its 30nm between the north/south lines.

I printed them out, calculated the range on that scale, and drew the arcs with a compass before trying it electronically.

And yes, more are on the way.

Is there a "average" list of ranges for different guns?

I know they will all differ according to barrel lenght, but just a simple list for working out these circles!

http://www.navweaps.com/ has ranges for many weapons.

And you can also use BigGun to calculate ranges...

I'm working on a Defenses of Manila Bay map, and it's interesting to note that the 1904-vintage 12" guns installed at El Fraile have - due to their lower elevation capability - a considerably lower range than the 155mm turret installed there.

Elevation limits

Turrets used in coast artillery often were modified to allow higher elevation than ship-mounted turrets. For instance, the triple 305mm/52 MK-3-12 turrets for Russian battleships were limited to 25 deg, while the coast artillery MK-3-12 triple turret for the 305mm/52 could elevate to 40 deg.

Another coast defense page!

This one's along a very strategic waterway, defending Djibouti.

Just in time...

for the increase in international tension following the collapse of the San Fransisco talks, I've posted a bunch more coast defense pages for both France and Russia:
