Empire of Japans Infrastructure

Japan's Infrastructure

The ports are spread out across the four main islands of Japan (Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku, Hokkaido). This is done to limit the damage to Japan's shipbuilding capability should an earthquake hit the area.

Ships launched between 1/1/1911 and 12/31/1920: 12
Factories: 22
Ships laid down between 1/1/1911 and 12/31/1920: 12

Firing Ranges:
Yagishiri-To (153 km North of Sapporo, Hokkaido)
Ko-Jima (90 km SW of Hakodate, Hokkaido)
Kammuri-Jima (78 km N-NW of Kyoto, Honshu)
Hateruma-Shima (460 km W-SW of Naha, Okinawa)
Nishino-Shima (947 km S-SE of Edo, Honshu)

I added the firing ranges so that I have locations where the ships can go to to practice gunnery.
Yagishiri-To is the best known firing range of Japan. People often visit nearby Teuri-To, less than five kilometers from Yagishiri-To, in order to catch a glimpse of the shooting.

Stupid me

Being busy with planning, I suddely spotted that I had typed 10 type I slips, while there are a total of 12 on the list. Probably because Niigata and Nihama have two of them rather than one.
So the list would be:

4 type V slips
1 type V docks
6 type III slips
3 type III docks
4 type II slips
2 type II docks
12 type I slips
4 type I docks

Arigatou gozaimasu, Pengorodu-sama !

... or I think that is how the Japanese would write 'Pengolodh'.
I still can't understand how that (very) minor error got in there when I posted it. I went over it about a dozen times, checking everything and making sure all the point calculations were correct.

lol

I had fits doing my infrastructure.

It's not easy when you look at what you want (with planning ahead) and what you need (when looking back at what has been built). And then you have to add up all the points to make sure you have enough infrastructure. But then you are not satisfied with it and remove a couple of Slip type 'X' and add some of 'Y' and 'Z'. But then you realize you don't have enough points, so you have to alter everything again. And then you end up with some unused points.
I thought spreading out my docks and slips along the four Japanese Island would be nice to reflect the fact that the Japanese have realized that earthquakes and Tsunami's could do serious damage to shipbuilding capabilities (and some other stuff). So at this point, I had to figure out where to put all those slips and then realize I used too many points again.

Yes. It can make a normal person go insane, but at least we're beyond this point now. Now we'll have to worry about what to do and build with the infrastructure points.

Fleet

At the request of a certain person, who shall remain anonymous, I’ve put up the data of the Japanese ships on the Infrastructure board and in the thread of the Japanese Infrastructure, making it easier to locate…
Before only the springstyle data was available, but right now, they are all in Springsharp data, which I haven’t bothered to post yet. I’ll arrange all the ship types in the same way as Red Admiral did.
There have been minor changes in the designs due to the one major change I made with all the designs: using metric for the gun calibers instead of imperial. I also neglected to put additional miscellaneous tons on the Fuso and Nagato designs due to their roles as flagships (especially the Fuso, since it is the Shogun’s flagship).
Another change is the Zuiho. Having made it similar to the Nagato (Kagas would have mounted 4x2 16 inch while the Nagatos mounted 4x3 14 inch), I ended up with a ridiculous range to keep it below 27,000. Also, I had no idea where to put the 20cm guns on the picture so I kicked them off the design and as soon as I have music again on this computer, I’ll erase them from the picture as well.
Another change is the alteration of the Length : Beam ratio of the Destroyers. They were above 12:1, but now they are below that.
Another change is the reappearance of armor on the Ao-ichi and Fu-ichi class. The original design for these unlimited ships were with armor, but then this bit appeared in the treaty stating that the unlimited ships between 600 and 2000 tons weren’t allowed to have any armor. Rather that to go into an endless discussion, I removed the armor (of this version the springstyle data was posted). But now that that bit has been removed again, I threw it back on. If anyone has problems with that… then sue me!!
:-)

I’m not sure if the ‘officers’ / ‘other rank’ ratio is correct. Could be completely wrong for the smaller vessels. The ration on the bigger ship has been based on the ratio used on the HIJMS Kamatari which was once a design of a fearsome 35 knot vessel to be built in the near future, but now it is a slightly slower, but just as fearsome vessel. The ‘officers’ / ‘other rank’ ratio used for the Kamatari is based on the ‘officers’ / ‘other rank’ ratio given in the book “Battleships of the Scharnhorst Class” which is given as:
Gneisenau (at outbreak of war) => 1,669 men (56 officers and 1,613 other ranks) and Fleet staff (10 officers and 61 other rank)
Scharnhorst (1943) => 60 officers and 1908 other rank

[Edit 7/18/2004: Slightly adjusted Zuiho so it would match the drawing. She is now simmed with the main and secondary guns flipped around to sim the superfiring secondaries. Also, the main guns were simmed with 6 inches of armor to sim the 4 inch casemate armor. Both have been edited (flipped back around)so it looks more acceptable]
