Your thoughts please!

Which of the following looks right, size wise, for a 12" turret?
A is my 8", E is my 15", my usual 1 pixel = 1 foot scale.

B barely looks larger than A. I'd go for C, seeing as C and D seem to be about the same width.

D looks a bit better to my eye. Do you have an intermediate size between 12" and 15" in your fleet?

D looks best to me.

Mind if I pinch that graphic?

It depends on the Caliber of your 12 inch guns. C for shorter barrels, D if they are longer.

All of them look a bit strange. I think D would be best. The barrels seem to taper too much, how about a constant thickness?

They are all slightly bigger than the previous turret., the difference is mostly just 2 pixels or 2 feet.

At this moment in Wesworld time, Denmark hasn't anything bigger than 8" (Turret A) in service, but considering the way things are going, I doubt if I will be commissioning anything between 12" and 15"

Feel free! I have more if you want them.

Ithekro = It depends on the Caliber of your 12 inch guns. C for shorter barrels, D if they are longer.

As D is a little bigger, I was originally thinking of it as a 13.5" or 14" turret. Would barrel lenght effect the overall size of a turret - surely a turret for 8" guns could take 8"/50 just as easily as 8"/40?

Strange in what way? As for the taper, I tried it other ways but they tend to look like tooth-picks!

I´d take D.

Witht he exception of A all barrels are too long.

I vote C.

What is the caliber of the 8", 12", and 15" guns under consideration?

Must admit, never really have played about with "Big Gun" software!

Don't need Big Gun

If you selected a caliber, 40 to a bit over 50 in the WesWorld usually, it will help you draw the gun length realistically.

Calibers

Standard US style calibers:
12"/40 cal = 40 foot long barrels
12"/45 cal = 45 foot long barrels
12"/50 cal = 50 foot long barrels
(I sense a pattern here?)

I know how the sizing system works, I just didn't see the point in giving data for barrel lenght when there was nothing to back them up, and DOS based programs just leave me COLD!!!!

If you use an existing type the data exists already, so you would just have to decide on a caliber for artistic reasons.

Errr 1ft is equal to 12".

For barrel length. 45-cal gives a good gun with long barrel life. 50-cal gives a gun with shorter barrel life, but more power.

I'd go for C for a twin 12" although you could have the barrels as close together as A.

Cheers,

And what of a 12"/55? ;)

Even shorter barrel life. For the US 16"/56 experimental gun, this was 125 full charges.

It depends on your muzzel velocity. The 12"/55 would have a shorter life but higher penitration at different ranges than the 50 or 45 caliber cannons. However it would last longer if one used the charge of a 45 caliber in the 55 I would think.

The charges are more or less identical for a 45 or 55 cal weapon, the longer the projectile spends in the barrel, the more speed it gains. Also because of the longer barrel, the liner is exposed to the hot gases for longer, bringing barrel life down.
