Raise the freeboard

You'll get more composite hull strength.

Apart from that, it looks like she'll be able to handle the abuse involved in the icebreaking mission.

I wonder what good so many guns do such ship? They need maintenance, crews, stocks etc. thus taking away tonnage, weight and space that could be used for things much more important in the ice.

The armor is also rather heavy but I guess that´s to sim her stoudly build hull...?

I think all those guns will be needed to hunt the Antarctic wildlife in order to create a decend dinner once the food supplies have mysteriously vanished.

That's right. Those are the same thicknesses as published ;) for the Russian ~10,000t 'breakers.

As for the guns...as I mentioned the 6" turret was on the stockpile, so I threw it on, to go with the 100mm guns to get to the Part III, G, I(c) limit. Another reason is, this ship is designed for long-duration exploration missions, so the designers considered the fact that hostilities might break out during a mission, and she might have to fight her way home.

That too. ;)

I've re-simmed her with the freeboard raised 1/4 meter and got hull strength up to 1.44.

Of course this is Wesworld. Antartica maybe important enough to warrent a major conflict. Having heavily armed icebreaking warships would give the Fillipinos an edge for Southern Polar domination.

What type of underwater hull would this ship have? If it was built to icebreaker standards it would have a rounded hull with no bilge keels. This would cause a great deal of roll in normal sea and would not provide a steady gun platform.

Who needs guns when shes that ugly?

10

Friday, March 4th 2005, 6:55pm

I thought the same thing when I saw the picture: "Good God! That thing is U.G.L.Y.!!!!!"

11

Friday, March 4th 2005, 9:55pm

It's a most cunning plan...

...stun the enemy with sheer ugliness, thus making him an easier target! :-)

(At least its momma didn't dress it funny! ^_^ On second thought, maybe not... o_O )

As for the hullform...good point. Unfortunatly Spring* can't do that, so we have to guesstimate.

Emm....
DAYGLOW ORANGE, and you think the other vessel will be an easy target!!!!!

Well, it is an EXPLORATION ship!:) So bright orange seemed logical so the scientists don't loose it in the snow. Granted its one heavily armed exploration ship. I'd heard penguins can be nasty, but sheesh! As for its looks, function over form. Swamp told me the catapult is on the bow, so I figured put the hanger forward too.

I agree, I just don't think ANYONE will ever see it as anything but an easy (to see, anyway!) target.

Would it not be better off with less weaponry, then it would not be seen as a threat, and it sure as hell can't outrun anything it can't outshoot that might hunt it down.

But of course, my dear Watson! After all, if the enemy thinks he's looking at a train wreck, he's not likely to be able to shoot first! ^_^

And who says she'd still be orange if hostilities became imminent? Plenty of room in there for cans of grey paint... :-)

As for the armament...I have a twin 6" turret sitting around taking up space in a Manila warehouse, and nothing else to use it on, so onto Pacifica it goes.

As a side note - in event of war, she would probably be used as a seaplane tender (hence being given a "Body of Water" name, which belong to Aviation Ships).

16

Saturday, March 5th 2005, 3:11am

Speaking of grey paint...

I've modified the pic so her upperworks are grey...and the plane, orange.

Is she uglier now? :-)

17

Saturday, March 5th 2005, 4:11am

It was uglier before? (I didn't see it earlier).

18

Saturday, March 5th 2005, 5:00am

She'll manage the mission

A bit more range might be useful - Icebreaking is slow work (2-3 knots or so) requiring full power for a long time.

19

Sunday, March 6th 2005, 9:56am

I've noticed a very very major flaw with this ship;

Where does the aircraft land if this is an icebreaker?
