Due to being over the legal tonnage limit specified in the Cleito Treaty, the Lexington and Saratoga underwent a refit in 1928-1929 to reduce weight, primarily through reverting to lighter 14" shells. Her revised characteristics are:

In 1938, Lexington and Saratoga began a major refit that would last two years. Their main guns were replaced with 16" guns and their superstructure was completely replaced with modern towers and 5"/38 turrets.
