Friederichshafen FF-50J (FF-49C)
Function: Reconnaissance Seaplane
First flight: 1917
Crew: 2
Engines: One 200 hp Benz IV watercooled 6-cylinder inline-engine
Wing Span: 56 feet, 3 inches
Length: 38 feet, 3 inches
Height: 13 feet, 11 inches
Weight Empty: 3,275lbs
Maximum Weight: 4,710lbs
Speed: 87 mph
Ceiling: 15,900 feet
Range: 490 miles
Armament: two 7.7mm machineguns
Replaced by the E1Y1 on ships.
The FF-50J was Japan’s reconnaissance seaplane just after the Great War. A special Navy committee decided that the FF-50J would be used from Japan’s capital ships to be used for reconnaissance. This posed a major problem for the designers since the FF-50 J was the heaviest plane Japan had, after Japan’s only Gotha IV bomber crashed in the winter of 1919-1920.
At first the FF-50J was lowered from the ship onto the water and took off from there, but the ship had to stop for that. The designers made a primitive system which would hurl the plane off the ship and into the air. It was not very effective system. The plane often did not have enough speed, forcing it to land on the water, or the system broke down which happened very often.
The FF-50J will be replaced by the E1Y1 aboard the battleships as of 1926, when a new catapult system will be installed, similar to the ones on Japan’s latest heavy cruisers. The FF-50J will continue to serve from seaplane bases.
The FF-50J is the only plane currently in service of the Japanese Military forces that has seen action, having been used during the As Salif campaign to assist the guns of the Indian warships.
