The next class of light cruiser will continue the trend of a light screening cruiser capable of anti-aircraft duties. The class will be slightly larger than the Medusa class and have increased electronics and AA equipment. Eight ships are planned. In addition another class of ships is being designed to replace the older six inch gun designs.

Medusa class CLAA

These ships are a slightly modified version of the nemesis class CLAA. They are ten feet longer, otherwise hull dimensions are nearly identical as is speed. AA is significantly increased with the use of quad mounts over the twins as in the Nemesis class. The electronics outfit and damage control is also greatly improved over the previous class.

Pioneer , Atlantis Heavy Cruiser laid down 1916 reconstructed 1931

In a similar refit to the Medusa class CA's, the Pioneers will be differentiated with the substitution of the twin 3" mounts with 4 twin 4.5" DP mounts and a minor change to the midships AA gun layout. These ships by 1945 are quite worn and will likely be retired from service and scrapped. Plans are being reviewed to prepare two of the class for conversion to test ships to study various weapons and machinery advancements. Its likely these vessels will be replaced by eight vessels.
