Type 42 class Fleet Submarine, designed to replace the old D-1 through 21 and boost fleet sub numbers, their entry into service was slow as the yards in Palinerus were too small to build them and needed to be expanded. As a result Additional R-98 class subs were ordered and small numbers of the Type 42 (numbered using new classification system, SSF-16 onward) began building in 1944 in other dockyards. Production eventually picked up pace and the last six boats were built in Palinerus as intended. Named after types of sharks.

R-98-class Submarine Given the large number of obsolete submarines of WW-1 era design still in service, the D-22 class design was an expensive commodity that was in short supply with only 12 ships. The collapse of the Cleito treaty in 1935 spurred Atlantean designers to come up with new submarine designs. Designers focus was still on coastal type designs and the R-98 was originally classed as such. With the R-74 type still building it wasn't until 1939/40 that the R-98 class started building. Ironically enough with the delay of the type 42 class subs additional units of the R-98 class were ordered to keep shipyards working and fill the expected gap in submarine production. This resulted in the R-98 class being the largest class of subs ever in the Atlantean fleet up until that time.

Twelve subs of the D-22 class were laid down as the first treaty designed submarines in the Atlantean navy, an additional four units were laid down, three for foreign navies and a forth as a test bed for new submarine technology. In the 40's the subs were considered short legged in terms of range when compared to the newer R-98 class subs and plans were made to refit them to fill a new role and increase their range. The now named Dolphin class were refitted to serve as Radar picket subs with emphasis on making the ships as quiet as possible with streamlining and other measures. Given their new role dive depth was not considered an issue. The original armament, her stern torpedo tubes and conning tower were removed. They had a new more streamlined conning tower added along with new sonar and Radar and a new armament consisting of 1x75mm, 1x40mm AA and 4 50 cal. MG's. Their range was increased and new diesel engines added. Their refit cost 507 tons each. (trim altered and bow form altered for new sonar)

XSS-3 class experimental submarine, renamed Novarum
Quite similar to the D-22 class except built without armament (8 tons)
200 tons for ballast
18 tons for Rostrum apparatus (1931)
10 tons for Fallax system (1931, removed 1942)



Modified D-22 class sub, used to test new experimental systems. The Rostrum device and Fallax system were the first systems tested which were later used on the R-98 class ships. XSS-3 was refitted in 1942 to test "Placidus" (4 tons) "Multiplex" (1 ton) and Gemini A and B submarine radars (5 tons). Gemini A was a series of radar antenna's fitted to the conning tower casing to provide a 180 degree radar coverage forward. Gemini B was a retractable radar set with a full 360 degree coverage. Gemini A was envisioned as a quick way to equip older subs with radar but it proved somewhat troublesome and was abandoned. Most likely will be refitted to serve as a training sub once current systems have been fully tested.

Two large subs planned for 1944. With rumors of various nations building Subs able to carry seaplanes, manned torpedo's and other equipment it was determined that exploration of this type of Sub was warranted. Like Japanese floatplane subs these ships used a twin pressure hull layout with a large pressure compartment outside the main hull. The placement of this compartment varied between the two ships, aft of the conning tower on Perch and forward on Permit. The two ships also carried a catapult and crane to launch and recover floatplanes, positioned to correspond to the placement of the hangar. Before the ships were laid down the area between the hangar and catapult was modified so that a landing craft or small amphibious transport could egress and be lowered into the water.
