Small modifications to 1938 Type above.

Four ships laid down 1940
Bari
Ostuni
Brindisi
Lecce

Instead of moving towards a common destroyer / escort design, Italy has decided to carry on with the construction of the "heavy" destroyer design instead. The ships laid down in 1940 will have some small alterations from the previous design based on operational and constructional experience. The main change is a new bridge with more room inside for equipment. Other changes include: a reprofiled bow with a larger knuckle; revision of torpedo tube placement; changes to boat types carried; addition of two twin 37mm AA guns in place of some of the 25mm.

Consideration was given to adopting the new dual-purpose 127mm gun instead of the 152/53 but the weapon's development has been protracted after the results from recent firing trials. The new, lighter gun arose after problems were identified with the 152/53 in the anti-aircraft role over the last few years in service. The mechanisation worked into the design was not enough to give a good enough compromise in the AA role. Whilst the gun is very gun for anti-surface work, it was found that sustaining a rate of fire above 8rpm was not practical. The 127mm is more of a compromise that will be poorer in the anti-surface role, but hopefully be able to sustain a rate of fire of 12-15rpm. The high muzzle velocity of the new gun will keep time of flight to similar levels as the 152/53 for increased accuracy.
