E.7. Sloops and Escorts

Note on Nomenclature:

Traditional naval terms such as corvette and sloop don't fit neatly with the functions of escort vessels as described here. India has therefore adapted a couple of indigenous terms to describe some vessels.

There are four ship types:

-Launch (PL): A very small, coastal vessel intended primarily as an ASW and rescue vessel. Not restricted by treaty.

-Charavaahaa (PC): From the word for "shepherd". An escort with AAW and ASW weaponry. Technically ocean-going, but the capability of units may be limited by range or size. Combination of traditional WW2 frigates and corvettes. Not restricted by treaty

-Paritraataa (PP): From the word for "protector". A general purpose escort with ASuW capability (torpedoes) in addition to AAW and ASW weaponry. Essentially a "destroyer escort", and the torpedoes make them restricted by treaty. They count against Indian CDS tonnage.

-Frigate: A general purpose escort trading some firepower for scouting ability, in the form of an aircraft. The inclusion of torpedoes makes them restricted by treaty, so they count against Indian CDS tonnage.

-Survey Ship: A derivative of the frigate design, trading firepower for technical workspace.

[SIZE=3]S-114 Class Paratraataa[/SIZE]

(Note: Specs revised 30/8/05)

The G-113 class of destroyers were scheduled for replacement during 1927-1929. Originally they were to be scrapped, but on further review it was determined that a rebuild into long-range escorts would be both feasible and economic.

The old 8.8 cm guns were landed, with a third 10.5 cm gun replacing one of them. Miscellaneous weight was increased to add depth charge capacity, and the four small torpedo tubes were swapped for three larger tubes in a single carriage. A smaller but much newer powerplant was installed, and the range was increased to 12,000 nautical miles. The continued presence of torpedoes does require that these ships be restricted by the Cleito Treaty, and for this purpose, they can be classified as Coastal Defence Ships, rather than destroyers.

Note that while the class was designated the G-113 class while in service as destroyers, the lead unit was lost in the Andaman War of 1916/7. Hence, after the conversion, the class is re-named for the oldest survivor, S-114.

A marriage of the sloop and the coastal minesweeper, types identified as priorities in the defence of India's coastal waters and shipping. The vessel is small and can be produced relatively quickly. The armament is deemed acceptable for dealing with submarines, pirates, and light torpedo craft, the most likely threats to Indian shipping directly offshore.

A run of ten are anticipated between 1929 and 1931.

[SIZE=3]Nanda Devi Class Frigate[/SIZE]

General-purpose ships designed to patrol the more distal parts of India's sea lines of communications. For this purpose, they have a large operating radius.

A catapult and crane are fitted for one seaplane. A telescoping canvas hanger, fitted on rails, is located immediately forward of the catapult and rolls aft to contain the aircraft in the illustrated location. This provides some shelter to the aircraft without adding a great deal of top-weight.

The vessel is equally capable as an escort to civilian vessels, and is fitted with depth charges. The torpedo fit is expected to deter smaller raiders and give the ship a fighting chance against a larger marauder.

Note that the torpedoes do cause the ship to be restricted; India is dipping into its CDS tonnage to build the type. Four units are anticipated.

The Kudligi class paratraatii are designed to be multi-purpose escorts - essentially, slow destroyers, capable of screening their charges against aerial, submarine, and limited surface threats. A variation on the Nanda Devi class frigate, four units will be laid down in 1931.

[SIZE=3]Sri Pada Class Survey Ship[/SIZE]

This is a very close variant of the Nanda Devi class frigate. The notable difference is that the torpedo tubes have been omitted in exchange for a larger aft superstructure, which contains working space for a surveying party involved in charting atolls and conducting bathymetry studies. Depth charge throwers have also been added to allow for an ASW function.

Two units were laid down in 1932. A replacement for the lost Sri Pada was ordered in 1942 to the same design.

[SIZE=3]Kantabanji Class Paratraatii[/SIZE]



Though lumped into the same classification as slower escorts, the Kantabanji class is essentially a high-speed gunboat designed to defend Indian shipping against small, fast craft in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea. The small hull allows for rapid construction in Type Zero facilities. As the design was rather hastily put together, it is anticipated that some shortcomings will be noticed once the vessels are in service.

The main armament consists of two 75 mm guns, fore and aft. Heavier 10.5 cm guns were preferred but two could not be fitted onto the hull without weakening the hull unacceptably. As it is, the lighter guns and their lighter shells should allow for a period of rapid fire before loader fatigue begins to be an issue. Although torpedos would be nice to add a strong anti-shipping punch, the deck space necessary for the gun armament precludes it.

[size=3]Thrissur Class Charavaahaa[/size]

The Thrissur class charavaahaa will begin construction in 1943. This escort is configured primarily for defence of civilian and fleet train vessels from submarine and aircraft.

This is the first unit to ship the Mangus ASW rocket launcher system, a device that has been tinkered with on and off for years (early experiments took place aboard the old light cruiser Jaipur). The system mounts nineteen rockets in a launcher in "Anton" position and are fired in one near-simultaneous salvo by remote control. 15 tonnes has been allocated to the loaded system, and 1 tonne to each reload salvo. As with the historical Hedgehog, it is assumed that the system can be manually reloaded in a few minutes.

Consideration was given to equipping the ship with 6x57mm rather than the various 125mm, 35mm, and 15mm, but it was felt that this compromised the vessel's ability to duke it out with a surfaced submarine or merchant raider.

As no torpedos are shipped (primarily due to lack of deck space) the unit is not considered a paritraataa like most other ocean-going escorts.

Ambala Class Charavaahii

This coastal escort type is in no respects spectacular, but it does have a reasonable top speed and a full Mangus ASW system for submarine hunting. The 105 mm gun allows engagement of surfaced submarines or delivery of warning shots across bows; the 57 mm installation provides some additional air defence, though the ship would normally be under Bharati land-based air cover anyway.

A basic winch and boom kit has been included for limited minesweeping capability; this would also be useful for retrieving practice torpedoes, wreckage, and other materials in the water.
