[SIZE=3]Ahmadabad Class Cruiser (Light)[/SIZE]

The two units of the Ahmadabad class have been designed specifically for the purpose of escorting the aircraft carrier Talwar, also being laid down this year. The ship is loosely based on the earlier Agra class, with a deeper and fuller hull form to allow for increase bunkerage while keeping the same maximum length (so that Type 2 slips and drydocks may be used for the class).

The ship retains the same main armament as the Agra class, while increasing the secondary battery to 12.5 cm dual-purpose guns. Two aircraft and a catapult are located amidships and it is expected that the two cruisers would assist Talwar in performing recce or search and rescue missions.

All weapons and aircrafts removed. Replaced with two different weapons systems based in the use of rockets. The first one is the use of rockets for ASW warfare. This barrage system composed of eight rails will be located in both aft and forward sections of the ship. Rockets with a 170mm warhead will be tested.

The second system will be the use of rockets for support of landing detachments. Rails for multiple barrage launches will be located where the aircraft facilities used to be located . Rockets with 125mm warheads will be used. They will be stored in the old hangars with the old aircraft fuel facilites also being used. Cranes will be kept to help with loading.

One of the agreements reached by the Gentlemen Agreement between Australia and Bharat were this extra heavy cruisers. While the original BNS plan was to build two 280mm armed ships the option was left open to build these ships in the future but the concerns of protection for the carriers was the main decision for starting construction of this class instead, leaving the 280mm armed ships for the time being on the drawing board.

With the Abuse Treaty in place Bharat now was able to laid down the 280mm armed cruisers they wanted. Plans were made to start construction for two of them in 1938, with the option of maybe more being built later on.

First cruisers laid down in four years, the Chapras were an evolution of the Vadadoras. Similar in layout they were basically enlarged with an heavier main gun as following the trends presented during the past decade to increase the size of the main battery. Four were planned with two laid down 1940.

The change in government saw a different approach in cruiser design. Work was suspended on the lead two units, and they were sold to Greece when 41% complete. The third unit, marked for conversion to an carrier, was scrapped on the way three months after being laid down.

The BNS's recent concentration on building up to ABUSE hull limits meant that a lot of resources were put into aircraft carrier conversions and large cruisers. Far less resources - to be more precise, none - were invested in light cruisers necessary to escort such units.

The Dombivli class light cruisers are larger updates of the earlier Kanpur class; they gain additional light guns, and ship a new 57mm weapon for anti-air purposes. They have heavier deck armor, more extensive belt protection, and increased range.

One unit will be fit into the 1942 program, and at least one additional unit is planned for 1943.

Bangalore Class

The Bangalore class cruisers are the largest light cruisers laid down by the BNS to date. A pair of units - Bangalore and Karachi - will be laid down in 1945 and 1946 respectively, and will likely form the heavy escort for the aircraft carrier Trishula once all are in service.

The class is designed around the twin 150mm automatic gun designed in collaboration with the RSAN and tested on the monitor Chandragupta. While the test mount has naturally experienced teething difficulties, these are gradually being resolved and it is felt that the mount will be ready for service by the time Bangalore completes trials in early 1947. Some consideration was given towards shipping a fifth turret aft, but the type was considered to be expensive enough as it was.

At this time, the 150 mm auto is considered to be an anti-surface weapon with limited anti-air capability. There is some skepticism about developing a true dual-purpose weapon, given the potential difficulty of tracking fast aerial targets with such heavy mountings and the overkill of 150mm shells against most conceivable aircraft. Consequently, a medium AA battery continues to be carried, along with a light battery of 57mm and 25mm guns.

Protection is improved in all respects over the previous Dombivli class, and speed and endurance are effectively the same. No aircraft are embarked, as the scouting function will be conducted by the screened carrier; that said, the quarterdeck may allow for autogyro landings.
