Other Notes
Experimental Motor Torpedo Boat La Combattante continues conducting extensive trials in the Manche to test its experimental gas turbine.

Construction continues on the new aircraft carriers Le Terrible and Tonnant. An unofficial model 3m long is displayed at the French Navy Museum in Toulon, showing a ship with enclosed hurricane bows (as on the previous three carrier classes), three catapults, and a starboard-side island with an angled funnel. Meanwhile, the carrier Foudroyant is completed, with Formidable shortly to follow.

The four Indochinese destroyers of the Ly Thuong Kiet class continue conducting sea trials in the Mediterranean. The lead two vessels have finished their training but remain in the Mediterranean awaiting the second pair of vessels. They will deploy to Indochina in June 1949.

A major program to increase the quantity of fleet auxiliaries is underway.

Marine Nationale Order of Battle, April 1st, 1949
The Marine Nationale is divided into three major and one minor fleet organizations based on geography: the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific Fleets, and the Indian Ocean Flotilla. Due to differing mission priorities as well as effective command and control, the Pacific Fleet is subdivided into East and West, each incorporating a defined overall operations area, although both exist under the same overall command. The Mediterranean Fleet possesses the bulk of the French Navy's surface forces, which can be assigned to the Force d'Action Naval (Naval Action Force).

Q1/1949 Notable Ship Movements of the Marine Nationale
A general overview of the major exercises and operations being undertaken during Q1/1949 by the Marine Nationale. This list is representative and not exhaustive.

Flotte de l'Atlantique
-- FO Atlantique Nord, under Admiral R. Godfroy, is undergoing an extended downtime following Operation Tigre 48 (which kept the fleet in an almost continuous at-sea deployment to Indochina for ten months in 1948). The exceptions are Foudroyant, Amiral Charner, and Duguay-Trouin, administratively under FO Atlantique Nord, but based at La Rochelle. These ships are conducting working-up trials out of La Rochelle, and rotating destroyer pairs from the 9th Flotilla Torpillieurs are sent to provide escort and plane-guard duties. The Russian carrier Reval and two destroyers join them in mid February.
-- Exercise Sagittaire 49: FO Atlantique Sud under Admiral E. Bailly conducts maneuvers south of Côte d'Ivoire and Côte d'Or operating as far as 5 E and 2 S.
-- Exercise Araignée: 4th, 5th, and 6th Vedette-torpilleur Flotillas conduct exercises in the Manche during the month of March.
-- Heavy cruisers Suffren and Marseillaise, administratively part of the 8th Flotilla de Croiseurs, are assigned as French participants in Operation Pioneer / Operation Wachsame Entschlossenheit until March 1949. The light cruisers Lafayette and Latouche-Tréville, also part of 8th Flotilla (again, only administrative) remain in La Rochelle conducting training exercises.

-- Exercise Catapulte 49: The Mediterranean Fleet under Vice-amiral André-Georges Lemonnier conducts a series of seven week-long maneuvers ranging between the region between Toulon and Algiers in the west and Cyprus and Suez in the east. Forces include four battleships, two battlecruisers, seven carriers, twelve cruisers, sixty destroyers, and forty-six other assorted vessels.
-- Between the maneuvers of Catapulte 49, elements of the fleet make port calls in Athens, Thessalonika, Byzantium, Chania, Heraklion, Beirut, Tyre, Sidon, Limassol, Larnaca, and Smyrna.

Yes. The Léon Blum is the second ship ordered from the Raymond Poincaré-class. The ships are basically designed to be large fast cargo ships with three twin-boom heavy-lift cranes. According to the doctrine, they can use their cranes (which are rated to lift tanks or MTBs) to offload their cargo even in the absence of any port facilities whatsoever, either toting along modular pontoons to build their own floating dock, or offloading into landing craft or lighters. The ships are owned by the French Navy but will be operated by civilian crews during peacetime.
