From Factories
Aigrette-class Harbour Tugs Fauvette, Gélinotte, Goéland, Grand Duc, Ibis, and Loriot laid down October 1st, 1948; launched complete on November 1st, 1948. 55 / 55 tons each (330t total) added Q4/1948. Completed.

Transactions
None.

Other Notes
Experimental Motor Torpedo Boat La Combattante continues conducting extensive trials in the Manche to test its experimental gas turbine.

Construction continues on the new aircraft carriers Le Terrible and Tonnant. An unofficial model 3m long is displayed at the French Navy Museum in Toulon, showing a ship with enclosed hurricane bows (as on the previous three carrier classes), three catapults, and a starboard-side island with an angled funnel. Meanwhile, the carrier Foudroyant is completed, with Formidable shortly to follow.

The four Indochinese destroyers of the Ly Thuong Kiet class continue conducting sea trials in the Mediterranean. The lead two vessels have finished their training but remain in the Mediterranean awaiting the second pair of vessels. They will deploy to Indochina in June 1949.

A major program to increase the quantity of fleet auxiliaries is underway.

Four more medium and four more light minesweepers are laid down, bringing the total under construction to sixteen ships of each type.

Ships being scrapped
No ships being scrapped this quarter.

- Total tonnage in recycling until Q4/1948: (5x80) + (8x72) = 976

Q4/1948 Notable Ship Movements of the Marine Nationale
A general overview of the major exercises and operations being undertaken during Q4/1948 by the Marine Nationale. This list is representative and not exhaustive.

Flotte de l'Atlantique
-- Operation Tigre 48: FO Atlantique Nord (temporary designation "Force Tigre"), under Admiral R. Godfroy sent to Indochina. Force includes carriers Clemenceau, and Gambetta functioning as aircraft transports. (Continuing mission started Q1/48.)
-- Operation Pegase: FO Atlantique Sud ("FO Bayard") under Admiral E. Bailly finishes joint exercises with German and Russian Forces in the North Atlantic. Exercise mostly completed during Q3; ships return to port shortly thereafter.
-- Heavy cruisers Suffren and Marseillaise, administratively part of the 8th Flotilla de Croiseurs, are assigned as French participants in Operation Pioneer / Operation Wachsame Entschlossenheit until until March 1949. The light cruisers Lafayette and Latouche-Tréville, also part of 8th Flotilla (again, only administrative) remain in La Rochelle conducting training exercises.

Flotte de la Méditerranée
-- Exercise Spartiate 48: Force de Action Naval under Vice-amiral A. Lemonnier conducts an intensive fall fleet exercise in the Mediterranean. This is the primary at-sea exercise for the French Navy's primary striking force, spanning the course of approximately thirty-five days at sea.
-- Exercise Andromaque 48: The Forces Légères d'Attaque under Contre-amiral M. St-Hilaire, make port calls in Syracuse (Italy), Rhodes (Greece), and Marmaris (Turkey) during at-sea training.
-- Training battleship Lorraine returns from a cadet cruise to visit the French possessions in the Caribbean Sea, French Guiana, the Gulf of Paria, and Recife (Brazil). Ship returns to Toulon by mid-November.
-- Destroyers Ly Thuong Kiet and Ngo Quyen (under partial Indochinese and French crews) continue working up in the Mediterranean. Mers-el-Kebir is primary base of operations.

Forces Navales d'Extrême Orient
-- Operation Chi huy Lanh hai bien ('Command of Sea Territory'): Ongoing operation by Indochinoise Patrouille Navale, supported by French 2nd Amphibious Operations Squadron, to establish navigational and defense stations in the Hoang Sa Islands against the possibility of Chinese incursions.
-- Force opérationnelle Indochine makes port calls at Singapore and Jakarta after conducting at-sea training exercises. On return voyage, destroyer Panthère liberates a Thai-flagged merchant vessel of 280 tons that has been seized by pirates.

Other
-- Sail-training barque Belle Poule begins circumnavigation, leaving Brest and heading into the Atlantic. Ship spends Christmas and the New Year in Cape Town.
-- Support ship Ingénieur Elie Monnier and research submarine CNRS-1 conduct three research dives west of Corsica before winter weather forces them to return to Toulon.
-- Ocean Research Ship Pourqui Pas conducting extensive research in the Society Islands.
-- Ocean Research Ship Naturaliste supporting the landing of supplies to Charcot base, the French-financed Antarctic research station near the Amery Ice Shelf.
