Seaman Qi, the boat's best sonar guy, took his time. He was still looking for a possible u-boat across the complete 360 degrees. Then he answered: "Nothing, Captain."

Even though there was currently no contact in the listening device, Liuming knew that the waters here were often visited by Filipino boats, which observed the shipping traffic. So it was necessary to keep his eyes open and to search the waters carefully.

But in front of his ship, a dense fog wall spread, which could not be penetrated either by eyes nor by the ships radar. In a short conference, both the crew and the scientists on board discussed what was likely the reason of the sudden appearance of the fog.

'We should let the dinghy into the water and try to drive through the fog.' the 2nd officer suggested. 'Also we could stay in contact by radio.'

A short time later, the dinghy, crewed by volunteers from the crew and a few scientists, left the ship and headed straight for the mist wall, where it disappeared shortly afterwards and only the chugging engine could be heard.

A cold wind blows across the vastness of the open desert that afternoon as the covered Jeep came to a halt and Kao Kan, Lao Che's son, climbed out. He pulled the collar of the coat higher, then took a battered leather satchel from the back seat, before making his way to the collection of large canvas tents that had been erected around.

Dozens of team members were busy clearing away equipment after the excavation, and were loading it on to a couple of trucks, and as Kan strolled towards the activity a grey-haired, distinguished man wearing a bush hat and a thick whoolen coat stepped out of one of the tents.

Professor Li Ji had a studious face, but it wasn't without humor, and when he saw Kan he removed his glasses, wiped them vigorously with a handkerchief, and smiled. 'Kao, you're back. And about time. I was beginning to think we'd have to send out a search party.'

'Sorry, Professor. I stopped off at Youlin on the way to see if there was any news.'

'And what's the word from Ordo's principal watering hole?'

'Nothing that would be of interest for you', Kao replied irritably.

'We found something.' Professor Ji said through clenched teeth. He quickly changed the subject as if the present topic were too dangerous, and looked a short distance away, to where a diesel generator was humming away in the chilling cold. Electric cables snaked into a large hole that had been opened up in the earth's face with a sturdy wooden safety frame constructed around it, a ladder leading down into the shaft.
