Other Notes
Technology development and investigatory committees are working on the following projects:
- Proyecto-P: Proposed Oceanic Patrol Ship to replace Vanguardia and Piloto Pardo. Design work is finalized and contracts are placed.
- Proyecto-Q: Midlife rebuild of Libertad. All major design work is complete and remaining personnel are employed in overseeing the rebuild.
- Proyecto-R + "Matorral": Exploratory studies commissioned by Naval Ordnance with input from Sisdef. ASMAR is incorporating Proyecto-R and Matorral design elements.
- Proyecto-S: Fleet Auxiliary Modernization Program.
- Proyecto-T: Proposed replacement for Parinacota-class destroyer transports.

The battlecruiser Capitan Prat is in reserve (mothballs) in Talcahuano under a caretaker crew. The battlecruiser formally retains its status as flagship of the Armada. There are currently no plans to fully retire the ship, and is scheduled for a brief at-sea training cruise during January 1949.

Four twin 13cm turrets from the Concepción-class cruisers presently remain in the stockpile. There is some discussion about using them for the Proyecto-P patrol ships or Proyecto-T type vessels. The remaining six turrets, judged in the best condition, were used for the Chacabuco-class destroyers.

The destroyers General Escala, General Lagos, Capitan Lira, and Capitan Toro have been retired to the reserve. Capitan Thompson and Capitan Carrera remain in service, but are expected to retire in June 1949.

The Navy has made the decision that the planned Proyecto-P patrol ships shall only replace the Vanguardia (a former seal-taking ship) and the Piloto Pardo (an aging ice-cutter). The much larger expedition ship Ignacy Domeyko, employed in the same patrol duties in southern latitudes, shall be retained in service for the foreseeable future.

The aircraft carrier Libertad is undergoing a refit in Talcahuano. The ship is being comprehensively modernized, with new engines, electronics, and British-supplied steam catapults.
