Tuesday 25. November 1947 – Central Station Shanghai

Hundreds came to the central station in Shanghai, where a special train was already waiting to take the participants and their vehicles to the starting point of the Silkway rallye. After yesterday's presentation of the participants, countless helpers have worked all night, so that all the vehicles are safely stowed on the train.

Friends, families and many spectators gave the teams the best wishes for the route. The anticipation for this adventure was everywhere noticeable and so after a long delay the locomotive was moving forward snorting and hissing and the train left the station.

And the adventure begins .....

Friday 28. November 1947 – Railway Station Jiayuguan

In the morning, the train with the participants of the Silkway Rallye arrived at Jiayuguan station. There the wagons with the vehicles was pushed to the loading ramp for a quick unload of the vehicles. While the drivers were taking care of their vehicles, the heavy lorries of the chinese army arrive to take the last stage of the transport. As soon as the vehicle had been loaded onto the transporter, the first column began to leave the loading area. Finally, the chinese participants left Jiayuguan station and were heading for Dunhuang, the starting point of the rallye.

Friday 05. December 1947 – Dunhuang

From the diary of a participant:

After a last night in Dunhuang - finally the day, which I was looking forward excitingly for ten months now, was here: The official launch of the Silkway rally was only 2 hours away.
The vehicles of the participants as well as their accompanying vehicles dominating the cityscape. It looks like the entire inner city consists out of numerous cars. The whole event is a great spectacle with lots of sightseers. A thousand thoughts passed through my head .... will my car work the whole distance - what if something gets broken - who is our strongest competitor. One last look on the engine ... everything is fine. We are ready to go.

Friday 05. December 1947 – Anxi [Guazhou]
From the diary of a participant:
" We have successfully completed the first stage of the Silkway Rallye and our car is running better than expected. Neither the dusty slope nor the low temperatures caused any problem, so we did not even have to make a repair stop. Nevertheless after we had arrived the finish of todays' stage, we brought the vehicle to the service team so they can have an eye on it and check all necessary things. While we enjoyed an extensive bath to wash the dust off our body.

Not sure why you keep on listing the Mitsubishi team entry as Class B while it is Class A.

The M46 is like this...

... which would be Class A.

It is not like this...

... which would be Class B.

Huge difference. The M46 is a sedan, not an SUV (and I think that even that one would be a Class A, though it might look like a Class B entry). It is definitely not a jeep (Class B).

Another thing which you might have forgotten was that I mentioned that Team 55 would be driving as a group so I would think that it is very unlikely that Team Great Wall would be second in Class D. It is more likely to be first or less likely last unless it is driving along with Team 55 as part of their column between the Type 97 and the Se-Ri.

Completely surprising the second stage was won by the team Minerva. On the second place is the team "Flying Pandurs". Fifth was Team Rover and on the sixth place team HAFDASA came to the finish.

Team 55 benefited from a necessary stop of the Chinese Team and won this stage.

Lap 4 (Zhangye - Wuwei):

Result of the fourth Lap (Wuwei):

Class A:
Surprisingly, the team Mitsubishi wins the stage and takes the lead in the overall rating. The team from the UK takes the second place just before the team Golden Dragon and Great Wall from China.

Class A1:
Team Yellow Crane has run a fantastic lap and deserves to be in the lead before Team Frazer and Team Allard.

Class B:
In class B the Chinese Yellow Crane team has also made an excellent lap and has a small lead before tomorrow's lap of the Silkway Rally. Team Minerva and the Flying Pandurs are only a few minutes behind. Team HAFDASA, Team Peugeot, which had to make a stop for necessary repairs, and Team Rover are further behind.

Class C:
Buses:
Team 55 defended his narrow lead in front of the team Yellow Crane.

Trucks:
The Jiefang CA-30 from Team Great Wall drives into a deep ditch and unfortunately has to end the race here, because of an broken axle. The Jiefang CA-10, the team's other truck, is benefiting from this failure and is expanding its lead against the Golden Dragon team with the SAIC 3to and Anhuai 3000.

Class D:
Team Great Wall extend their lead against Team 55.

Lap 5 (Wuwei - Lanzhou)

Result of the fifth Lap (Lanzhou):

Class A:
After a driver mistake of the Japanese, the team from Great Britain took over the lead again in this class. The team Golden Dragon is only a few minutes behind, the team Great Wall already has a bigger lag.

Class A1:
Team Yellow Crane defends his lead in front of the two teams from Great Britain Team Frazer and Team Allard.

Class B:
The Chinese team can expand their leadership a little bit. Since the team Minerva is pursued on this lap of bad luck and has to change the tires twice, the Flying Pandurs and the team Peugeot can overtake and advance to the places 2 and 3. Team Rover left his last place and overtook the team HAFDASA.

Class C:
Buses:
Team 55 took the wrong direction on a crossroad and therefore has now to catch up a few minutes.

Trucks:
Due to the failure of the other Great Wall team, it is of course difficult to maintain the lead, but the Jiefang CA-10 manages it and places the Golden Dragon team in second and third place.

Lap 6 (Lanzhou - Tianshui)

Result of the sixth Lap (Tianshui):

Class A:
The team from Great Britain leads just before the team from Japan, this again just before the team Golden Dragon. The team Great Wall tries to make the backlog not too big.

Class A1:
Team Yellow Crane can further extend their lead, as the second place team Frazer has to carry out a tire change. The team Allard nearly caught team Frazer and is with a distance of a few seconds on place 3.

Class B:
The Flying Pandurs take the lead as the chinese team has to make a stop to repair the brakes. This stop also brings Team Minerva to # 2 and Team Rover to # 3. The team HAFDASA took the fifth place due to a tire damage. The team from Peugeot tries to repair the engine until the next morning. If this were not possible, the rally would be over for the French.

Class C:
Buses:
Team 55 benefited from a repair stop of the Chinese team and a small accident in which also the Yellow Crane team was involved and won the sixth stage masterfully.

Trucks:
The remaining Great Wall team drives alone at the top, while the two Golden Dragons exchange their places.

Lap 7 (Tianshui - Baoji)

Result of the seventh Lap (Baoji):

Class A:
The team from Great Britain can defend his first place. Team Mitsubishi and Team Golden Dragon almost simultaneously reached the finish of the lap. The Great Wall team continues to fight against the growing backlog.

Class A1:
Team Yellow Crane remains in the lead. Team Allard benefit from Team Frazer's mistakes and finishes the lap at second place.

Class B:
The Flying Pandurs are still in the front. Team Rover continued his catch-up and overtook the team Minerva shortly before the finish of the lap. The team Yellow Crane can shorten the distance to the third place and the team HAFDASA becomes fifth. The repair of the engine needs longer than expected, so the team Peugeot starts on the last place with a big delay, which grows during the stage by a tire damage. After the backlog no longer seems to be catchable, the French team decided to give up and did not finish the lap.

Class C:
Buses:
Team 55 has to make an over-long repair stop, because there are problems with their service vehicle. After the service vehicle of class D arrived, the repair was finished. Thus, Team Yellow Crane wins the lap safely.

Trucks:
The Team Great Wall is expanding its leadership. The second place is the SAIC 3to of Team Golden Dragon and just behind it is the Anhui 3000.

Class D:
During an accident of the Great Wall team, the chain jumps from the casters. Due to the necessary stop and the resulting time loss, the Team 55 can extend its lead again.

Result of the seventh Lap (Baoji):

Lap 8 (Baoji - Xi’an (Chang'an))

Result of the eighth Lap (Xi’an (Chang'an)):

Class A:
Team Mitsubishi wins the stage with a narrow lead and is therefore in the overall ranking in front of Team Triumph. Due to a small accident, the team Golden Dragon falls a bit back in the fight for the top. Team Great Wall can reduce the residue a little bit due to a good performance.

Class A1:
The team Yellow Crane has been haunted by bad luck on this stage. First, the Chinese team lose the lead to Team Allard due to a driver mistake, but then the misfortune is even worse. The continuation of the race is endangered by an accident with a civilian vehicle. With a big gap to Team Frazer's second place, Team Yellow Crane is reaching Xi’an, where the mechanics immediately go to work to repair the vehicle.

Class B:
The Yugoslav team lost their lead to the Team Rover because of a necessary tire change and, together with the team Yellow Crane, reached today's finish of the lap. Team Minerva, which was on a good place makes a detour and finished the lap as a fourth-placed team. Team HAFDASA is still fifth.

Class C:
Buses:
Due to yesterday's long-lasting repair stop, the team 55 lies far behind the team Yellow Crane, which can even extend its lead on this lap.

Trucks:
While Team Great Wall remains undisputedly number one, the two vehicles of the Golden Dragon team are changing their ranks.

Class D:
Team 55 was able to prevent the team collegues from giving up in class C, but this was at the expense of the lead and so Team 55 is lagging behind Team Great Wall.

Lap 9 (Chang'an - Luoyang)

Result of the ninth Lap (Luoyang):

Class A:
Team Triumph is able to catch up the team Mitsubishi and comes almost simultaneously with the leading Japanese to the finish of the lap. Team Golden Dragon also strikes back and reaches the finish in Luoyang with only a few minutes behind the two leading teams. Team Great Wall continues the race at the fourth place.

Class A1:
Team Allard is close to Team Frazer, whose residue has grown to the leaders by a tire damage. The team Yellow Crane, which can participate in the rallye through the excellent support of the mechanics, creates the miracle and can shorten the gap to the second place.

Class B:
The Flying Pandas which are meantime again on place 1 on this lap, are beaten by Team Yellow Crane shortly before the finish. Team Rover has a good third place and still has chances to win. The team HAFDASA can extend their lead to the last place and has also a good chance to reduce the distance to ranks in front of them. The Minerva team is back on a black day and only comes as a fifth-placed team to Luoyang.

Class C:
Buses:
Team 55 can reduce its residue, but is still far behind the team from China.

Trucks:
No changes in the classification.

Class D:
Team 55 continues to fight against Team Great Wall and can shorten the deficit slightly.

Lap 10 (Luoyang - Taiyuan)

Result of the tenth Lap (Taiyuan):

Class A:
The team from the UK profits from a driver's fault and can overhaul the Team Mitsubishi at the beginning of the lap and kept the lead up to the finish line in Taiyuan. In the end, the Japanese are also be beaten by the Chinese, as Team Golden Dragon won the second place with a fantastic sprint. At the fourth place is Team Great Wall, and must hope on a miracle on the last stage to be able to reach the victory. Due to the short intervals between place 1 and 3 the last lap promises to be very exciting.

Class A1:
Team Allard got a good day and won this stage just before Team Yellow Crane, which benefits from a defective cooler and the necessary repair at Team Frazer. Also in this class it promises, that the last lap will be very exciting, as all three teams still have chances of winning.

Class B:
The Flying Pandurs can hold their tight lead on this stage thanks to the excellent driving skills of the yugoslavian pilot. At the remaining ranks, Team Yellow Crane is just in front of Team Rover and the two teams HAFDASA and Minerva on the common fourth place. While the first three teams still have a real chance to win, the two teams on the joint fourth place have only theoretical opportunities on the overall victory. They have to hope for a mistake or failure of the other teams.

Class C:
Buses:
The team Yellow crane drive on this lap in a comfortable pace in the sense of a secure victory and therefore lost almost its complete lead. On the final stage, it will be therefore a head-to-head race.

Trucks:
In this class, the winner seems to be fixed, because the advantage of Team Great Wall on second place is too big. But also the last lap must have been driven.

Class D:
Team 55 are still on their way, but they can not completely eliminate the backlog on Team Great Wall. If the Chinese do not have any bad luck, they should bring home the victory.

Result of the tenth Lap (Taiyuan):

Class A:
#1: Team Triumph
#2: Team Golden Dragon
#3: Team Mitsubishi
#4: Team Great Wall

Lap 11 (Taiyuan - Beijing)

Result of the eleventh Lap (Beijing):

Class A:
At the start of the final stage, Mitsubishi's team is trying to reduce their gap to the two leading teams from the UK and China. The Japanese take a big risk and are on the limit several times. So unfortunately the disaster happen and team Mitsubishi collides with a civilian vehicle and has to put in an additional repair stop. Unluckily, the Japanese team can not catch up the lost time until the finish line and finish the Silk Way Rallye on a good third place in front of the fourth-placed Team Great Wall from China. Team Triumph and Team Golden Dragon show a great fight, which is ultimately won by the English Team.

Final Ranking:

Class A:
#1: Team Triumph
#2: Team Golden Dragon
#3: Team Mitsubishi
#4: Team Great Wall

Class A1:
In this category the distances between the individual teams are even smaller than in class A. And against the bookmakers' betting, Team Yellow Crane from China has a real chance to win the Silk Way Rallye. The Team Allard from Great Britain is the winner of the last and longest lap and therefore the winner of the overall ranking. An excellent second place got the Chinese Team Yellow Crane just before Team Frazer, also from the UK.

Final Ranking:

Class A1:
#1: Team Allard
#2: Team Yellow Crane
#3: Team Frazer

Class B:
On the last lap it's all haywire. First of all, the tires of Team Rover are bursting and they must take an additional stop - therefore the two teams HAFDASA and Minerva can catch up again. At the same time, the two leading teams from Yugoslavia and China are able to create a greater gap. Towards the middle of the lap, the Argentinian team collides with a wild animal and almost has to end the rallye. Only in the last second the repair can be completed and the race be continued. However, they are knocked out in the last place, which they kept to the finish. The team Minerva was in a fair fight with Team Rover for the third place and was defeated by Charles Tucker and Ted Griffiths on the last kilometers and will be fourth behind the English. A real head-to-head race happened on the last hundred kilometers between the Flying Pandurs and the Team Yellow Crane. Both teams would be given the victory, but also no team will be voluntarily only second. But finally, Konstantin Prigal with his Flying Pandurs can drive away a little and wins the Silkway Rallye just before Wang Jin and the Team Yellow Crane.

Final Ranking:

Class B:
#1: Team Flying Pandurs
#2: Team Yellow Crane
#3: Team Rover
#4: Team Minerva
#5: Team HAFDASA
#6: DNF Team Peugeot

Class C:
Buses:
Both teams fight in a head-to-head race for a long time on the final lap. But on the last 50 km the team Yellow Crane can go a bit into the lead and win the lap and thus also the overall ranking.

Final Ranking:

Class C:
Buses:
#1: Team Yellow Crane
#2: Team 55

Trucks:
The Team Great Wall has won a convincing victory on the last lap, and so defending the lead in the overall ranking. Second place is the SAIC 3to from the team Golden Dragon and place 3 goes to the Anhui - also from the team Golden Dragon.

Final Ranking:

Class C:
Trucks:
#1: Team Great Wall (Jiefang CA-10)
#2: Team Golden Dragon (Anhui 3000)
#3: Team Golden Dragon (SAIC 3to)
#4: DNF Team Great Wall (Jiefang CA-30)

Class D:
The team Great Wall has luckily used an amphibious vehicle and this is a big advantage for them on the last lap. In one of the last river crossings of this rallye, the team can take the lead by using a more direct route, and so the Japanese can not catch up to Beijing. Thus the Team Great Wall won before the Team 55.

Final Ranking:

Class D:
#1: Team Great Wall (Liexi TAV)
#2: Team 55 (KHI Type 97)
#2: Team 55 (“Se-Ri”)
