The Bund - The famous promenade of Shanghai is festively decorated and this year's participants of the Silkway Rallye stand up along the promenade with their vehicles. Numerous spectators and countless motorsports interested people are walking through the streets to get a glimpse of all vehicles and their drivers, especially the european vehicles are admired. For the representatives of the international press a conference room in the Palace Hotel was reserved and the bookmakers along the streets accepted the first bets. In Class A, the British team was seen in front before the Great Wall team from China. In class A1, the two teams from the UK were seen more or less together on position one, and the Yellow Crane team from China were only given outsiders' chances. In Class B, the bookmakers said they had no favorite, in this class all teams were in a position to win. Class C was split up among the bookmakers in buses and trucks, at the buses the Chinese Yellow Crane team was just in front of the Team55 from Japan; at the trucks the favorite was clearly the Great Wall team from China. And in Class D, the bookmakers saw the Great Wall team ahead of the Japanese team.

A business associate of mine just returned from Shanghai and said he'd gone with the intention of seeing the Bund. He didn't actually go because the overcrowding was so bad - standing room only for a two hour shuffle just to reach it.

The chinese government mandated different shipyards with the construction of several so-called Maritime Customs Service Ships, whose task is to check the compliance with customs regulations at sea. Also border and marine policing tasks as well as tasks of the fishery control are transferred to these ship. There will be two different classes of these vessels. A modern large variant with helicopter (Houbei-Class) and a small for the coastal area (Danjao-Class).

In the meeting room were beside Admiral of the Fleet Tan Won and his deputy Fleetadmiral Zhen Chenggong also the commanders of Task Force South and the commander of the Cover Force Admiral Hong-Li. They were sitting at a huge round table and besides numerous diagrams and sea charts were also some drawings of different ship types pinned on the walls of the meeting room.

The conference lasted a few hours and Admiral Hong-Li was just finishing his report. “We should be concerned about the modernization of our fleet. Sure we are just about to modernize our capital ships and thanks to our South African friends, we now also have the opportunity to modernize our two older seaplane carriers the HICMS Douliu and HICMS Dounan, but we also urgently need additional supply vessels.” he says. “In addition, we need additional ships to secure our shipping routes in the South China Sea. And only one light ship is sure not enough to make the waters safe.”

A chinese delegation left the chinese capital on board of an EURASIA flight in the direction to the South African Empire. According to reports, the economic relations between the two countries will be deepened. Among other things, the China Aviation Industry Corporation will be further expanded and in addition, a joint fleet maneuver in the Indian Ocean is planned for next year.

A heavy earthquake shook the region around Qamdo in the Tibet Autonomous Region. According to first reports, there were serious damage in this area and some villages were partially completely destroyed. There are reports of huge sand volcanoes, big earth cleavages and large land slides. By the movements of the ground floods events caused great damage, because the rivers rose by bringing a mixture of sand, mud, trees and other debris.

Monday, 29 December 1947; Buoy-Tender "Liaocheng-2" , Lema-Channel

Thus far the Liaocheng’s mission had been uneventful; equipped and properly outfitted she had no difficulty in deploying the brand new buoys. It was time to exchange the old ones, as weather and the salty ocean had very much affected the buoys.

Her crane lifted the next buoy over the side. The ship maintained station until the buoy was stable and in position. It was a monotonous but important job to exchange all the buoys flanking the Lema Channel.
