As with the previous earthquake, the French and Chilean governments will offer their assistance. The Chileans will offer to send immediately some Army field hospital units, and some transport companies with trucks (Unimogs) and aircraft (large and small). If any assistance is required for search and rescue, other assistance can be sent as well...

The Argentine government gladly accepts the offers of assistance from Chile and France too.
One thing that has been learnt from recent earthquakes is that a fast response is essential.

Atlantis can offer a small fleet of auxillary's to deliver food, aid supplies and personnel to assist in rescue efforts. The fleet would consist of the transports Gadir and Tanais to deliver personnel, the LST Lago de Maracaibo and the attack transports General Manuel Cedeno and General Ambrosio Plaza to deliver trucks with supplies. The fleet would also be there to assist other nations helping with the efforts as well. The attack transports would have some medical facilities on board to assist in medical relief efforts. Colombia could also send personnel to assist and would likely hitch a ride on the Atlantean ships.

The Argentine government gladly accepts the offers of assistance from Atlantis and Colombia as well.
As the earthquake was well inland, medical facilities aboard ships are probably of less utility at the moment, but the food and aid supplies will be most welcome.

Japan could send supplies and medical personnel to Argentina, though following the June 28 Fukui earthquake, supplies would be somewhat limited.

The manly Atlanteans will get those ships there, even if they have to get out and push.

Actually I was thinking that the many aircraft being sent by other nations, allies in particular, would be able to airlift in the supplies in and those in medical distress out. At any rate Atlantis will also be sending its own aircraft if needed.

More transport aircraft would be most welcome.
The government of Argentina fully understands that the needs of Japan's own earthquake-stricken victims must come first. Any expertise in search and rescue though would be most welcome.

The Japanese Red Cross wishes to know if there is some place in or near the disaster area where their three G10N1-L transporters can land and unload goods and the rescue crews. Once unloaded, the cargo hold of these big planes could temporarily be used by a number of people to eat or sleep while protected from the elements.

Military Air Base San Miguel de Tucuman is the nearest and best equipped airfield in the region, can certainly handle up to medium bomber size but the G10N1 might be a bit big to safely operate on the runways. Salta has an airport but is mainly a regional one rather than equipped for heavy intercontinental aircraft.

Rescue efforts are well underway in the Province of Salta with aid supplies and assistance pledged from several nations around the world. Although much damage has been caused only two confirmed fatalities have been recorded, certainly a very lucky result given the intensity of the earthquake. Makeshift housing and hospitals are being erected and supplies of foodstuffs and medical supplies are increasing.

28 August
The troop transport ARA Vicente Fidel Lopez commissioned today into the Navy with the Auxiliary Squadron. The ship will be based at Rawson to operate in peacetime along the Patagonian coast, keeping local communities supplied during the winter and making regular runs to Terra del Fuego.

29 August
Rescue and recovery efforts are in full swing in the Province of Salta. The military airfield at San Miguel de Tucuman, the best equipped airfield in the region, and the airport at Salta have been very busy with scores of transport aircraft flying in with foodstuffs, medical supplies and construction materials and departing with several severely injuries casualties. These have been fewer than feared but now the main task is to avoid the outbreak of disease and begin restoring water and electricity supplies and begin repairing roads and other infrastructure and homes.

As plans get underway to replace the current MTB fleet, which is aging rapidly with poor mechanical reliability, a new class has been designed utilising the best practice of the MAS series with some improvements. The first two have been assigned as training vessels and today TM-28 and TM-29 commissioned with the Training Squadron at Viedma.

4 September
The stock market in Cordoba rose today and share prices of food and livestock companies rose on the news that the Paraguayan Prime Minister Juan Natalicio González announced that all commune farms and food distribution centres will be nationalised on 1 October 1948.

10 September
The Navy has just concluded Exercise Spearfish, a five-day anti-submarine exercise involving several destroyers and escorts and submarines of the Navy as well as Naval aircraft.

16 September
Indupa (Indústrias Patagonicas) began trading today from its new factory in Viedma, Río Negro Province as a producer of chlorine, Polyvinyl chloride resins (PVC) and caustic soda. Indupa is a subsidiary of the Belgian chemical giant Solvay S.A.

20 September
Reports of unrest in the rural areas of Paraguay have caused some disquiet in government circles. The Paraguayan military attaché has reportedly asked for Argentine support in operations against Marxist agitators and Bolivian Marxist militias believed to be roaming the Gran Chaco.

24 September
The 1948 Campeonato Argentino de Rugby was won today by Capital who beat Estudiantes Paranà 17-7 to win the title for the second year running.
Argentine rugby is still reeling from the fact that the recent Oxford-Cambridge rugby union tour ended with the visitors winning all nine matches.

1 October
At the AFNE shipyard in Bahia Blanca history was made today as the Defence Minister Vice Almirante (ret). Juan Perez Benedicto Hood oversaw the ceremonial laying of the first keel plate of the first aircraft carrier to be designed and built in Argentina. The Project 721 design is a modern design displacing 16,000 tons and carrying a capable airgroup. The ship, likely to be named Libertad, will complete before 1951 and will replace the old Italian carrier Avispón. Possible refits for the Independencia and Guardabosques, both built in Japan, include the removal of some of the 115mm mounts on the flight deck to make extra room. No date has been suggested for when this work may be carried out.

4 October
Confused reports from Paraguay indicate a military junta has taken power in efforts to stabilise the situation and that Prime Minister Juan Natalicio González is currently under house arrest.

5 October
In a radio broadcast this morning General Horacio Vasquez spoke to the Paraguayan nation. He explained that the unstable government Prime Minister Juan Natalicio González which had failed to the deal with the Marxist revolutionaries who hold power across a swath of the rural areas of the nation had to be removed in order to ensure that law and order could be reestablished. The Chamber of Deputies was barricaded by soldier but it appears that Luis Torres, the leader of the National Peoples Party has been appointed by General Vasquez as the new Prime Minister. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Torres will try to form a coalition national government with the Catholic People's Party and that Torres' appointment was conditional of General Vasquez being installed as a President.
There have been no reports of violence so far, but the situation in the towns and rural areas remains tense.

The Peruvian Foreign Ministry announces that it is monitoring the situation. Reports from Peruvian consuls are fragmentary and conflicting.

7 October
Reports from Paraguay indicate the situation is still tense but so far no violence has erupted and no major political shifts have occurred in policy. Luis Torres, the leader of the National Peoples Party was sworn in as the new Prime Minister this morning.

12 October
In Paraguay, news reports indicate that the National Peoples Party and the Catholic People's Party have formed an alliance voting bloc in the Chamber of Deputies. General Vasquez has been nominated as President but this has not yet been ratified.

17 October
The Transport Minister Miguel Suraez today publicly announced that work will soon begin on electrifying the inter-city railway line from Cordoba to Rio Cuarto with work to be completed in 1950. Further phases of work will see the electrification of the line extended to Realicó by 1952, Santa Rosa by 1954 and ultimately to Bahia Blanca by 1957.

18 December
The D’Silva Beef Company has set up a subsidiary in Paraguay, D’Silva Foodstufs & Exports S.A. The company is run from the large D’Silva ranch run by the formerly disgraced tycoon Antonio D’Silva. The ranch is the only business holding he retains after the State stripped him of most of his assets following his trial in the mid-1930s for treasonous acts.

20 December
The MTB replacement programme has got underway and today five new boats, ARA M30, M31, M32, M33 and M34, commissioned with the 1st MTB Squadron at Viedma replacing older boats.

22 December
The football club, Club Atlético Newell's Old Boys, has won the Primera División Argentina. San Lorenzo de Almagro were runners up.
