Infantería de Marina del Perú - Background

General

Upon its formation in 1933 the Infantería de Marina del Perú was heavily involved in the border conflict with Bolivia and subsequently in clashes with Chile and Colombia; by 1940 however the relative peace in the region permitted the Infantería de Marina to refocus its attention to more naval-related activities, with the following primary missions:

(1) Provision of security at naval dockyards and other installations
(2) Provision of anti-aircraft defense at naval installations
(3) Provision of ships’ security detachments and the core of naval landing parties
(4) Mobile riverine operations in the Amazon basin.
