Peruvian Plans - 1948

To address the difficulties of movement in the region of Loreto and the upper Amazon, Peru plans to construct the following types of craft. The Lancha de desembarco de Infanteria is primarily a troop carrier, to be used by the Batallóns de Infantería de Marina Fluvial of the Infantería de Marina del Perú; the Lancha de desembarco de Apoyo is a support vessel on the same hull.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the 120mm secondary guns on the Almirante Grau are actually those wacky "twins simmed as triples" thing. Would it be possible to fix that with the re-simmed ship, perhaps moving it to miscellaneous weight or something?

Additionally, the "Main belt does not fully cover magazines and engineering spaces" isn't on the original ship, so I suspect something fiddly's wrong with that - I'd have to look into that in more detail to figure out what it is.

So the Grau's secondaries are simmed as eighteen 120mm guns in six triple turrets - but if I remember correctly, the ship actually has twelve 120mm guns in six twin turrets. The spare gun in each turret was simmed in as a way of showing that there was some extra play in the design for, say, extra automation equipment etc.

I think Grau is the only case of that happening to a Peruvian ship, but there are others elsewhere in WW...

Looking back at the encyclopedia posts, it has as a note:

So the commentary is there. The guns are twins, but they've been simmed as triple mounts...

Basically, to fix it, just re-sim the ship with 12x120mm secondaries in 6x2 configuration, and then add in the miscellaneous weight you'd gain.

I mean, this isn't a really big deal, since you've got the note already in the encyclopedia, and you're not changing the guns during the proposed refit. It's just that Grau is the only ship simmed in this fashion.

Actually it is slightly more complicated than that. The magazine weight is based off shells for those 18 secondary guns so you would have to find some way to replace the weight of the 6x(IIRC) 180 120mm rounds that you would loose by simming the armament as 12 guns instead of 18. Sure you could ignore that as the change in magazine would be covered by the refit, but Peru is a poor nation and I doubt they would do something like wasting 6 precious tons (or so) extra on the refit. :)

Oh. *That's* what that note meant. I couldn't fathom the meaning. And by fixing it I gain some misc weight, rather than losing more. I misunderstood your original intent. I'll work on it.

I have followed your suggestion and have noted the 120mm battery as only twelve guns in six twin mounts. This makes a minor change in the power plant requirements and eliminates the anomalous “Main belt does not fully cover magazines and engineering spaces” comment.

However, it does increase the overall hull strength value from 1.01 to 1.04, and increases the light tonnage figure from 14,339 to 14,371. It also increases the stability from 1.10 to 1.11 – which comes as no surprise.

Have I missed something? Or should I allow some values to drift in order to correct the ‘triples’ comment? If so, which?

Its a tricky business correcting these kinds of design issues. I'd be happy to accept the slightly higher hull strength and stability and the extra 32 tons is not much to lose sleep over either. You could pay in an extra 32 tons in the refit report if it bothers you, but the difference isn't that big.

A general comment for all these ships, but most dominantly for the Almirante Villar and the Ancash. I think you're overestimating the amount of weight you need for radar by anywhere from 200-300%. The antennas are generally the heaviest parts of the equipment, and IIRC the heaviest sets usually weigh in at 8-12,000 lbs. Right now, 140t of radar is probably equivalent to placing one or two more triple turrets on top of the ship's superstructure...

By comparison, the refitted Constitución (195% more displacement than Ancash) has 52 tons of radar. It might help you to perhaps break down the list of installed sets according to roles. I can provide a quick proposal if it would help.

It is quite probable I am over-estimating the tonnage for radar on the refits; but I haven't any good information to go on for the weights (or mass) of Dutch radars and associated equipment. I figure that it may also take into account space/weight for generator sets, CIC, and things of that sort. If I were designing vessels from the keel up I would likely be more concerned.

But if you have specific ideas to better distribute the weights I'd be happy to consider. It's not going to change the cost of the refits and it might allow me to include a couple of Inca Kola machines on the mess decks. :D
