A small vessel intended to protect minefields from light craft and minesweepers or, alternatively, to provide mobile fire support to army units fighting in coastal regions.

I believe you are correct. This is what comes from note-taking late at night. Historically it was a Chilean victory, but Peru also had several warships that carried the name.

Yes - even though it was a Chilean victory the Peruvians still acquitted themselves honorably in the face of overwhelming force.

Indeed. I find it amusing that Chile celebrates their Navy Day on the anniversary of their defeat at the Battle of Iquique, while the Peruvians celebrate their Navy Day on the anniversary of their defeat at Angamos...
