Hmmm... maybe I am blind but I cannot find anything regarding Project 78 "Barrakuda". Search for "Project 78" and "Barrakuda" only gives me this thread and the Q2/1947 thread but nothing when it comes to a sim of the vessel.

5

Wednesday, January 4th 2017, 6:51pm

I haven't posted a SubSim yet since the boats are being laid down this quarter.

6

Wednesday, January 4th 2017, 10:27pm

Considering it is something that was mentioned as being (IIRC) "approved" in Q2, I would expect that the sim would have been posted rather soon after that, even if it is for vessels being laid.

Guess you are struggling with assigning the miscellaneous weights to the various things as much as I am currently struggling to get Skyrim to start running properly. :)

I didn't struggle with it at all, since I just abandoned the battlefield to the enemy and nuked it from orbit. It was the only way to be certain.

Hmmm... Kinda average. Nothing really spectacular, though perhaps that is because I tend to throw more stuff on my submarine. :) Kinda funny that the Barrakuda is lighter than the combined weight of fuel and batteries on my I-315 design. :D

I don't see anything regarding torpedoes... well there is something on them in the old posts of the Russian encyclopedia, but they only give ranges and nothing regarding weight. Would be nice if it was indicated how many torpedoes the design had.

Well, that's what you get for loading your submarine down with the decadent trappings of capitalist excess! Russian submarines are designed to fight wars, not star in 'my-duck-is-bigger-than-your-duck' contests. Quack. ;)

"Average and unspectacular" means I achieved my design goals. :)

I generally estimate the 53cm Russian submarine torpedoes at ~2t per, so it can carry eighteen torpedoes, thirty-six mines, or a mix of the two. Surface ship torpedoes weigh more since they're longer-ranged.

But... but... but they are there to give crew morale a major boost!! Surely the Russians realize that by adding a few decadent trappings of capitalist excess like a huge storage for Vodka and Caviar will boost the morale and efficiency of a submarine's crew by 1000%!!

... sure there are certain side effects with the Vodka like a slight reduction in accuracy and hangovers the next day when excessive amounts of Vodka is used and when they are in a harbor, the womenfolk are no longer safe on the streets...

Well, the I-315 was not only designed to fight wars but to fight foolish submarines like the Barrakuda. :P

Granted there is 100 tons of less serious stuff aboard and the 'wart' probably makes it one of the ugliest submarines in Wesworld, but the remaining 8600 tons of the submarine make it an efficient killing machine. :)

One thing both subs have in common is that they are not flat pancake submarines. :D

Okay, that is the same as me, although the Japanese surface ship torpedoes also weigh more because they all use 24" torpedoes instead of 21". Looking quickly I get the impression that the Russian surface ships use a mix of 32cm and 53cm or 65cm torpedoes. One design I can remember as having 20 tons for eight 53cm torpedoes.
