The Ejército is subordinate to the Ministerio de Defensa Nacional (Ministry of National Defense) and ultimately to the President as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Command and control is administered through:

the Comandancia General del Ejército (Army General Command)
the Estado Mayor General del Ejército (Army General Staff), and
the Inspectoría General del Ejército (Army General Inspectorate)

The operational units of the Ejército are allocated to one of four regional commands

Región Militar del Norte – headquarters Piura
Región Militar del Centro – headquarters Lima
Región Militar del Sur – headquarters Arequipa
Región Militar del Oriente – headquarters Iquitos

The population of the República del Perú, according to the 1945 census amounts to 7,285,000, from which is drawn 19,000 conscripts of the contingente anual. The conscripts will serve for two or three years [1] with the active army before passing into the reserve.

The army’s cadre, the Ejercito Profesional, comprises the officer corps and long-serving non-commissioned officers, numbering approximately 10,000 officers and men.

The bulk of the active army’s strength consists of conscripts doing their military service, the Ejercito de Leva. This portion of the army’s strength numbers approximately 38,000 officers and men, the former graduates of officer training programs offered at universities. Upon completion of their service, conscripts have a further nine years of military commitment before completing their obligation to the state.

The total strength of the active army is approximately 48,000 men, exclusive of civilian officials and other technical personnel, comprising:

Cadre (Long service Officers and NCOs): 10,000 (Ejercito Profesional)
Conscripts: 38,000 (Ejercito de Leva)

Total: 48,000

Following completion of their active military service conscripts pass to the first line reserve (the Ejercito Territorial) which consists of the four most recent classes that have completed their military service. The role of the Ejercito Territorial is two-fold – to bring units of the active army up to full strength upon mobilization, and to form fresh units to reinforce those of the active army in time of war.

Upon completion of their commitment to the Ejercito Territorial conscripts will pass to the second line reserve (the Ejercito de Milicia) for a further five years. The role of the Ejercito de Milicia is to act as a home guard and to form a manpower pool for the active army in the event of war.

Summary of reserves:

Ejercito Territorial: 4 classes of conscripts ~ 70,000 men plus reserve officers and NCOs with continuing commitments.

Ejercito de Milicia: 5 classes of conscripts ~ 90,000 men inclusive of reserve officers and NCOs with continuing commitments.


[1] The Contingente anual provides that recruits for the technical arms (artillery, engineers, tanks) to serve for three years, while the non-technical arms (infantry, cavalry, services, etc.) would only serve for two years.

The Guardia del Palacio de Gobierno del Perú is primary guard force for the President of Peru and for the Government; it performs both ceremonial escort and regular internal security functions and constitutes the major part of the garrison of Lima.

The Guardia comprises:

The Legión Peruana de la Guardia
The Batería de Artillería Volante

The Regimiento de Dragones ‘Mariscal Nieto’ maintains one horsed squadron (Escolta del Presidente de la República), one tank squadron, one armored reconnaissance squadron, and two motorized rifle squadrons.

The Regimiento de Caballería ‘Husares de Junin’ maintains two horsed squadrons and three motorized rifle squadrons for internal security duties.

The Legión Peruana de la Guardia comprises two companies of fusileros for ceremonial guard duties and one regimiento de infantería of nine companies for internal security duties.

The Batería de Artillería Volante, formerly a part of the Legión itself, comprises a mounted troop of four guns for ceremonial salutes as well as a motorized bateria de Artillería de campaña equipped with 75mm field guns.

Cuerpo de Caballería y Blindados – Armored and Cavalry Corps

Regimiento de Caballería Blindado – Armored Cavalry Regiment

Comprises Command and Service Squadron, Tank Squadron, two Armored Reconnaissance Squadrons, and two Motorized Rifle Squadrons. Total troop strength 745 – 36 officers, 130 non-commissioned officers, and 579 soldiers. Principal equipment includes 8 medium machineguns, 8 trench mortars, 8 antitank guns, 20 scout cars, 18 armored cars, 18 tanks, and 96 other motor vehicles.

Batallón de Tanques – Tank Battalion

Comprises Headquarters Company, three Tank Companies, and one Assault Gun Battery. Total troop strength 452 – 28 officers, 85 non-commissioned officers, and 339 soldiers. Principal equipment includes 53 medium tanks, 9 armored troop carriers, 4 assault guns, and 42 other motor vehicles.


Cuerpo de Infanteria – Infantry Corps

Regimiento de Infantería – Infantry Regiment

Comprises Command and Service Company, Reconnaissance Company, six Rifle Companies, and one Support Company. Total troop strength 1,807 – 48 officers, 211 non-commissioned officers, and 1,548 soldiers. Principal equipment includes 12 medium and 8 heavy machineguns, 18 grenade launchers, 12 antitank rifles, 8 trench mortars, 52 all-terrain field cars, and 16 other motor vehicles.

Batallón de Infantería Motorizado – Motorized Infantry Battalion

Comprises Headquarters Company, three Motorized Rifle Companies and one Heavy Weapons Company. Total troop strength 750 – 43 officers, 132 non-commissioned officers, and 575 soldiers. Principal equipment includes 22 medium machineguns, 9 grenade launchers, 4 trench mortars, 4 antitank guns, 37 full-tracked infantry carriers, 46 half-track troop carriers, and 52 other motor vehicles.

Batallón de Infantería de Montaña – Mountain Infantry Battalion

Comprises Headquarters Company, three Mountain Rifle Companies and one Mountain Heavy Weapons Company. Total troop strength 925 – 28 officers, 94 non-commissioned officers, and 803 soldiers. Principal equipment includes 48 light and 10 medium machineguns, 6 antitank rifles, 6 grenade launchers, 4 trench mortars, 16 motor vehicles, and 92 animals.

Batallón de Infantería de Selva – Jungle Infantry Battalion

Comprises Headquarters Company and three Jungle Rifle Companies. Total troop strength 674 – 24 officers, 70 non-commissioned officers, and 580 soldiers. Principal equipment includes 36 light and 6 medium machineguns, 2 antitank rifles, 12 grenade launchers, 2 trench mortars and 63 animals.


Cuerpo de Artillería – Corps of Artillery

Grupo de Artillería de Campaña ligero – Light Field Artillery Group

Comprises Headquarters and Headquarters Battery and three light Field Artillery Batteries. Total troop strength 375 – 15 officers, 81 non-commissioned officers, and 279 soldiers. Principal equipment includes 12 field guns (75mm or 105mm) and 103 motor vehicles.

Grupo de Artillería de Campaña pesado– Heavy Field Artillery Group

Comprises Headquarters and Headquarters Battery and three heavy Field Artillery Batteries. Total troop strength 364 – 14 officers, 64 non-commissioned officers, and 286 soldiers. Principal equipment includes 12 field howitzers (150mm) and 118 motor vehicles.

Grupo de Artillería de Montaña – Mountain Artillery Group

Comprises Headquarters and Headquarters Battery and three Mountain Artillery Batteries. Total troop strength 352 – 14 officers, 76 non-commissioned officers, and 262 soldiers. Principal equipment includes 12 mountain guns (75mm) and 186 animals.

Grupo de Artillería Antiaéreo ligero – Light Antiaircraft Artillery Group

Comprises Headquarters and Headquarters Battery and three Light Antiaircraft Batteries. Total troop strength 205 – 12 officers, 44 non-commissioned officers, and 149 soldiers. Principal equipment includes 12 light antiaircraft guns (20mm) and 44 motor vehicles

Grupo de Artillería Antiaéreo pesado – Heavy Antiaircraft Artillery Group

Comprises Headquarters and Headquarters Battery and three Heavy Antiaircraft Batteries. Total troop strength 400 – 20 officers, 75 non-commissioned officers, and 305 soldiers. Principal equipment includes 9 light (20mm) and 12 heavy (75mm) antiaircraft guns and 82 motor vehicles

Grupo de Artilleria Antitanque – Antitank Artillery Group

Comprises Headquarters and Headquarters Battery and two Antitank Batteries. Total troop strength 219 – 13 officers, 39 non-commissioned officers, and 167 soldiers. Principal equipment includes 12 heavy (60mm) antitank guns and 63 motor vehicles


Cuerpo de Ingeniería – Corps of Engineers

Comprises one Command and Service Company, two Engineer Companies, and one Bridging Column. Total troop strength 429 – 20 officers, 59 non-commissioned officers, and 350 soldiers. Principal equipment includes 70 motor vehicles and 12 pontoons.
