Beijing Newspaper Q1/1947 - Chinese news and events - January / February / March

Somewhere in the South China Sea aboard U-103; Friday, 3 January 1947

»Silent mode !« Captain Ruan Chengfa ordered.

A few hours ago the lookout discovered a surface vessel, which they pursued until nightfall on the edge of the viewing circle. Once the night had fallen they turned towards the ship to dive at the last moment and disappear from the surface.

»Distance three thousand five hundred meters«, announced the first officer. »Direction one-four-two, speed fourteen knots, course two-six-one.«

»Periscope up !« The attack periscope moved out of its cover. A master's mate stepped behind the periscope and pulled down the handles. The captain took the bow of the target in the crosshairs.

»Mark - target !«

The master's mate put the values in the so called torpedo data computer.

»Twenty degrees starboard.«

»Equation set. Tubes three and four clear....... FIRE !«

»Great.« Chengfa stepped back from the periscope and said to his First Officer. »You want to see what we have hit ?«

»Gosh !« The first officer laughed.

Chengfa grabbed the microphone of the intercom. »Commander is speaking. We have just completed a tracking exercise and, if anyone is interested, sunk the Shanghai Express ,a large tanker from SINOPEC. That's all.« He put the microphone back in its socket.

»Criticism ?« asked Chengfa his deputy.

»That was too easy, sir«, said the first officer. »Speed and course of the target remain constant. We had to have the objectives motion analysis earlier, if we would not have been fixed on a zigzag course. But overall it was pretty good, I think.«

Chengfa nodded in agreement. They had to be careful, because a fast object like a destroyer might well run directly towards them and slow ships were constantly change the course under war conditions .

»We'll make it.« Chengfa looked around and said »Well done, guys. Keep it up.« He decided for the next exercise, to report the contact not until they had approached quite close. Then his men would prove how quickly they were taking an attack.

»If the Fips (nickname in the chinese navy for the inhabitants of the philippines) want trouble, we are ready.« thought Chengfa.

I was kinda expecting a "Congratulations! You just sank a truck!" remark. Still it is comforting to know that they know that they can 'hit' friendlies. :)

Sounds familiar... ;)

USS CHICAGO
"Close-approach procedures," McCafferty ordered. McCafferty had been tracking a surface ship for two hours, ever since his sonarmen had detected her at a range of forty-four miles. The approach was being made on sonar only, and under the captain's orders, sonar had not told the fire-control party what they were tracking. For the time being, every surface contact was being treated as a hostile warship.

"Range three-five hundred yards," the executive officer reported. "Bearing one-four-two, speed eighteen knots, course two-six-one."

"Up scope!" McCafferty ordered. The attack periscope slid up from its well on the starboard side of the pedestal. A quartermaster's mate got behind the instrument, dropped the handles in place, and trained it to the proper bearing. The captain sighted the crosshairs on the target's bow.

"Bearing-mark!"

The quartermaster squeezed the button on the "pickle," transmitting the bearing to the MK-117 fire-control computer.

"Angle on the bow, starboard twenty."

The fire-control technician punched the data into the computer. The microchips rapidly computed distances and angles.

"Solution set. Ready for tubes three and four!"

"Okay." McCafferty stepped back from the periscope and looked over at the exec. "You want to see what we killed?"

"Damn!" The executive officer laughed and lowered the periscope. "Move over, Otto Kretchmer!"

McCafferty picked up the microphone, which went to speakers throughout the submarine. "This is the captain speaking. We just completed the tracking exercise. For anyone who's interested, the ship we just 'killed' is the Universe Ireland, three hundred forty thousand tons' worth of ultralarge crude-carrier. That is all." He put the mike back in its cradle.

"XO, critique?"

"It was too easy, skipper," the executive officer said. "His speed and course were constant. We might have shaved four or five minutes on the target-motion analysis right after we acquired him, but we were looking for a zigzag instead of a constant course. For my money, it's better to proceed like that on a slow target. I'd say we have things going pretty well."

McCafferty nodded agreement. A high-speed target like a destroyer might well head directly for them. The slow ones would probably be altering course constantly under wartime conditions.

"We're getting there." The captain looked over to his fire-control party. "That was well done. Let's keep it that way." The next time, McCafferty thought, he'd arrange for sonar not to report a target until it got really close. Then he'd see how fast his men could handle a snapshot engagement. Until then he decided on a strenuous series of computer-simulated engagement drills.

Wednesday 8. January ; Somewhere near the Ross-Ice-Shelf

It was still early morning when the boats were lifted down to the ocean surface. Some scientists and parts of the crew, a total of nearly 25 men are brought up to the pack ice. The weather is cloudy and the sky overcast. The increasing waves and the wind during the morning indicates an approaching storm. The pack ice in this area is interspersed with some icebergs but the boats found some protection in an ice bay. The vertical ice movement is still remarkable and makes the landing difficult, but fortunately no major problems appears. At 12 o'clock all boats are reinstated back aboard. The biologist and oceanographer were remained on board to make various measurements but this takes more than the predetermined time. Shortly before half past four the wire of the oceanographers and the fishing net of the biologists are aboard again. After finally everything is stowed, Commander Sun Wei-ju gave the commando to start the engines, and gave three long blasts from the horn as the last farewell of the "HICMS Zhuhai," the crew, all members of the expedition in the vastness of Antarctica, which gradually disappears in the clouded sky. The ship was on course back home.

So which side of the Ross-Ice-Shelf did they land? The safer Western side where the Chinese can count on the Mount Erebus Volcanic Observation Station as well as the Ross Ice Shelf Scientific Observation Station about 200 miles to the South of the Mount Erebus Volcanic Observation Station or the more dangerous Eastern side where they are hundreds of miles away from rescue should something terrible happen?

I have no doubt that the brave Chinese scientists and their support staff chose the Eastern side. 8)

"Thank you for your comments." said primerminister Chiang Kai Chek. "What about the possibility of a license production of those machines, so that we can further increase the output of our mining industry ?"

"The purchase contract forbade this possibility unfortunately explicitly." answered Ming Pi Wai.

"Maybe we should contact the Germans again and re-discuss this issue with them." said the primeminister and gave minister Chi Peng the word.
