In an editorial today the editor of the Walloon Worker's Paper decried the fact the German's have moved half a division of Panzers to the Fulda Valley and has been exercising "offensive Panzer attacks and other Panzery things using Panzers and such" which he decried as "typical Boche militarism aimed at blackmailing their so-called French allies and our own glorious homeland of Walloonia [sic Belgium] and we shall defend ourselves against such naked aggression with our own powerful forces of fortifications, concrete, mines, guns, concrete, mines, more guns, concrete and mines and our own anti-Panzer Panzers and other strong arms made in Walloonia [sic Belgium]."

Are Walloons prone to run-on sentences? :P

I rather think that they need some remedial work in geography... Considering where Fulda is. :P

Being a writer by trade, I'm more alarmed at their grammatical sins rather than their geographical sins... :P

I'm pretty sure that they would feel the same way if you were to try to write something in French.

Nonsense, je suis sûr que Google Translate fait un travail remarquable.

I doubt that those silly French-speaking Belgians from 1947 have access to any kind of online translation services let alone access to the Internet. Also Google Translate is pretty unreliable when it comes to making proper sentences. I've watched a Japanese movie called "The Floating Castle" and the English subs that are available for it on the internet are quite horrible. Looking a bit further, I found that there were German subtitles available as well which actually make sense. Putting the two subtitles next to each other, I am fairly certain that someone took the German subtitles, threw it through Google Translate, never bothered to check it, called it "English Subtitles" and uploaded it. I think it is something I mentioned some months ago (either here or on the Navalism board or in the chat or in a pm) and gave a few examples of the subtitles's English... so here are some examples again:

- "Even if it is me life costs!"
- "The building has given us 8000 Gold Kan cost."
- "Power can only gain with gold."
- "Just a great battle I will also lead times!"
- "Prepare for the spears the warrior in front of the East!"
- "It was a big mistake the Nagano goal attack!"

... and there is much, much more stuff like that. Sometimes, you have an idea what it is about, and sometimes it's just plain weird and makes no sense (and it only makes sense to me when I look at the German subtitles). So there is no 100% guarantee that what Google gave you is a proper French sentence.

... and thinking of weird translations, I kinda want to go and see if I can find a copy of Star War: The Backstroke of the West somewhere.

Yeah, that actually made the movie hilarious instead of cringe-inducing...

The funniest translation thing I've personally encountered actually came at work. I had our China office translate some technical documents into Chinese for me, and then I copied their translations back into my document templates in order to meet with company standards. In order to make sure I was putting the right thing in the right places - a secondary double-check, as it were - I pasted the Chinese translation into Google Translate, and brought the Chinese back to English. While it usually translated back into English with roughly the same meaning as the original English document, I found a few quirkly things.

Like the term "flame rod". The Chinese term for this little device translates back into English as... THE MOTHER OF FIRE! :D :thumbsup:

That sounds so much more badace than 'flame rod.'

8 October
Six vessels of the old PC-1 Class of patrol vessels set off from Zeebrugge today in consort with the destroyer tender Zenobe Gramme. The ships are making a delivery voyage to Pacifica and the Zenobe Gramme will be providing support en-route and will ferry the crews back following the delivery.

1 November
Fabrique Nationale has announced that it is working on a new gas-operated semi-automatic rifle, mainly as an export weapon but also to meet the future needs of the Belgian Army. The company did not specify when the new rifle will complete development but it seems likely that prototypes will not be ready for testing until next year.

12 November
The last few 150mm FH GP Schneider M1917 howitzers, a Great War era weapon of French origin, have been withdrawn from use with the Army.

23 November
Four new escort sloops equipped with fully modern gunnery and anti-submarine systems have commissioned in the Navy today. The four ships of the Spa class have joined the 1st Escort Squadron at Zeebrugge. They will be followed by another two ships next year. This will then complete the modernisation of the escort fleet.

29 November
20cm of snow has fallen today in Saint-Hubert as winter begins its grip on the region.

20 December
The last two MW class mine warfare ships, MW-5 and MW-6 have commissioned with the 1st Mine Warfare Squadron at Antwerp today.

28 December
Emphasising the almost complete elimination of coal-firing from the Navy was the commissioning of the new tanker, Krekel today at Zeebrugge. The second tanker serving the fleet, she will keep the escorts and minesweepers of the fleet topped up during North Sea operations, extending their on station time and can support operations further afield if necessary.
