Project 81 Admiral Kornilov

One of my priorities over the last few years has been upgrading the Russian cruiser and destroyer fleet. The destroyers received more early attention, mostly since they're faster and cheaper to construct en masse. But the cruiser fleet has seen some changes as well, with four 8x6"-armed Avrora class cruisers. The Baltic Sea Fleet is also picking up two new 130mm-armed "Kreyser Protivovozdushnoy Oborony", the air defense cruisers Rynda and Diana.

The new cruisers have mostly been on the small side, but for 1947 I've got a bit more tonnage to throw at some projects of greater importance. I've evaluated a lot of alternative designs. Some are extreme, armed with 305mm guns. Others are very plebeian, such as repetitions of the 10x130mm Diana class.

One historical Soviet vessel that I've always liked is the Sverdlov-class (Project 68bis) cruisers. I think they're just some of the best-looking of the Soviet ships. "Strong like bear!" This leads me to Project 81: as I winnowed out designs, one of the constant contenders I favored is a clone of the Sverdlov class. There are a few minor differences. Project 81 incorporates the same 152mm autoloaded guns introduced aboard Avrora, and I used four shafts and a slightly different machinery setup (just because I favor it). I'd probably prefer to drop the auto-loader setup, but I need to keep it in order for my smaller cruisers to remain competitive with all the 15x6" turret farms and the other 6"-auto armed cruisers that have appeared over recent years.

Current opinion likely will result in the class ship receiving the name Admiral Kornilov, although I've not finalized that yet.

A powerful cruiser and you certainly can't go too far wrong cloning the Sverdlov.
