The areas of Loulan and Gushi have a walled city and walled suburbs; they lie at the border of the salt marsh.

Do you mean four rows of six cylinders? A six-row four layout seems really unusual to me...

May fault, of course i meant four rows of six cylinder

The German Government has always been ready to discuss means of improving Sino-German economic cooperation. It hopes that normal trading relations can resume now that hostilities are over. If the Chinese Government has specific topics it wishes to open discussions on, they will be evaluated on their individual merits.

18. February 1946 - early morning aboard chinese Recon-Flight

The image that lends itself to the four men in the lonely Nanchan N2R2, could not be described even by their former geography teacher with the most beautiful words. From about six thousand feet they look down on the headland of Cape Pinghaizhen with the barrier island Shenggao. But the more they gain altitude, the less is their interest in the beauty of the landscape.
The Nanchan N2R2 continues to rise, and the altimeter needle climbs in small jerks from brand to brand. It has become quiet in the membranes of the crew radio. The eyes of the men went to the east, to the preliminary goal of their flight.
Like an endless mirror gleams the water area of the South China Sea in the glare of the sun. The Dongsha island remains behind the course of the reconnaissance aircraft after they have changed the course to the east. Now they are already flying over four thousand meters above sea level, their thoughts move away from the airfield in Huizhou, which they had left some time ago, towards the destination of their flight.

The ready flight of Fighting Eleven, two Grumman F6Fs, had been scrambled from Basco as soon as the unknown had appeared on the station’s dradis screens. Red Leader and his wingman, Red Two, pushed the throttles of their aircraft to the firewall as they clawed for altitude.

“Red Leader to Base,” the flight leader reported. “Passing three thousand meters now.”

The fighter controller at Basco acknowledged. “Continue on present course. Unknown is ahead and above you, approximately twenty kilometers distant.”

Both pilots suspected that the unknown was Chinese; the course, speed and altitude suggested as much. There was no regular commercial air traffic in this area, and unscheduled flights few and far between – particularly coming from the northwest.

“Passing three thousand five hundred meters now,” Red Leader reported. The rules of engagement were very strict – identify the unknown, ascertain its intentions, and dissuade if from entering Philippine air space. The two Hellcats continued to climb.

The fighter controller continued to monitor the course of the unknown as well as the two Hellcats. “Approximately five kilometers distant at this point, level with you; course unchanged,” he advised Red Leader.

Red Leader let out a small sigh of relief. They were above four thousand meters now, and could maneuver for a high-side intercept. “Let’s get in the sun and get ready to welcome our friends,” he ordered his wingman.

They know very well that they are still in international airspace, but the proximity to the Bataan Archipelago decreased every minute and in the same way everybody got more nervous in the recon aircraft. From the small box next to the radio there was a steady buzzing tone.

"Damned as i thought" murmured the radio operator and listed the set frequency to its message block.

" Reaching the turning point in a few minutes " the co-pilot and navigator said over the intercom.

"Keep your eyes open comrades" admonished the pilot his crew. " Our Philippine friends sure don't like our action."

The fighter controller at Basco advised Red Leader that he should be in visual range.

“I see the bogie,” Red Leader replied. The aircraft’s long, thin profile was unmistakable. “Unknown is a Nanchan N2R2; single aircraft.”

“You are cleared for intercept,” the controller advised. “Aircraft is in international airspace. Convince him to turn around.”

“Roger control,” Red Leader acknowledged. He waved to his wingman and pushed his stick down to take station behind the Chinese aircraft.

The crew aboard the bogie seemed to be unaware of the fighters’ approach out of the sun; advising his wingman to take station in the intruder’s ‘six’, Red Leader pulled level with the Nanchan’s cockpit and waved at the Chinese crew, indicating that they should turn around now, and intimating that if they did not that serious consequences would follow.

"Damned ..... was there something ???" He was not sure whether he had seen anything or whether it was just an illusion. As a Filipino, he would certainly come directly out of the sun, that was sure.

"Approaching fighters from behind", sounded the voice of the radio operator into the onboard microphone.

"I knew it" thought the pilot "We are still in international airspace, therefore he sure won't shoot, and we have almost reached the turning point of our flight, so everything is okay."

"Two fighters, estimated Grumman F6Fs of the philippine navy. One kept his place behind us, the other throttles his speed and comes to the right side "

As the pilot turned his head to the side and saw the unmistakable gesture of other pilots he knew what to do. He turned the steering wheel to both sides so that his aircraft wiggled his wings, as a sign that he understood the philippine pilot. Then he greeted the other pilot and put his plane into a slight curve to the left, away from the Philippine airspace.

The pilot of the Chinese reconnaissance aircraft waggled his wings to acknowledge Red Leader’s hand signals and initiated a slow turn to port. Red Leader easily stayed with the bogie, as did Red Two on its ‘six’. The Nanchan reversed course in a graceful arc and settled down on a course back towards Chinese airspace. The two Grummans stayed with their ‘guest’ for twenty minutes before breaking off to return to Basco.

“Did the Chinese think they could get through our defenses undetected?” Red Leader mulled that over in his mind on the flight home. Somehow he doubted that the Chinese really intended to do that – an overflight of Philippine sovereign territory in broad daylight would be suicidal. Probing the Philippine defenses to gauge reactions and determine their limits however would make sense. “I have a feeling we might see more of these incidents” he thought.

Transradio Press Service, Berlin, Thursday, 7 March 1946

A Chinese trade delegation arrived today to open discussions with officials of the German Government and representatives of the Reich Federation of German Industries. Trade and financial relations between the two nations have been cool for several years now, and the recent hostilities in the Far East have cut ties to a minimum. The arrival of the Chinese mission opens the door to normalisation of commerce and a potential boon to the German economy.

11. March 1946 - HQ South Fleet Zhanjiang

Around the tabel sat Admiral of the fleet Tan Won with his staff and some other naval air service officers. Topic of discussion were the reconnaissance results of the flights over the south china sea.

"I hope there was not any violation of philippine air space during the reconnaissance flights ?" Admiral Tan Won asked.

"No. All flights were conducted exclusively in international airspace!"

"Good. What lessons have you learned from these flights ?"

"Some. Our filipino friends have definitely a radar station on Bataan Island; this is certainly part of their early warning system. Furthermore, the flights have shown that this early warning system works with the presumed frequency. Also we have roughly figured out how fast our neighbors react after we were discovered by their radar."

"Well done. I would suggest that we continue the recon flights. Maybe we'll be able to find a 'black hole' in their system."

"Eye Sir."

" What about the events in the south ?" Admiral Tan Won asked.

" The ships were clearly on the way to Itu Aba and now dropped anchor in front of the island. We do not know, what the Filipinos are doing there. I think we should keep our eyes open."

"I agree. We should take a look on these islands from time to time !"

Thinking OOC for the moment...

To which city was this airliner bound? I was not aware that China and Chosen (or Japan for that matter) had resumed normal commercial air service.

I was thinking the same thing. What is a Chinese airliner doing east of Chosen?

... No doubt a spy plane disguised as an airliner...

... and the next thing is that they will be claiming that the plane was shot down either by Chosen or Japan...
