Netherlands Naval Plans

Well I'm now getting closer to deciding on some urgent stuff and future plans and I'm posting it here so folks can kick it around and double-check my thinking.

Disposals
The two Zeven Provincens and the two Koning Wilhelms will be decommissioned immediately. The capital ship plans are much as Kirk had planned except the Ijelsijks will serve in the Far East until the Kortaner II Class ships arrive sometime in 1947. This frees up manpower and removes the oldest ships.
One Konig will be returned to SAE as a museum ship. I doubt the others will make it onto the open market.

Four light cruisers will go, both of the Javas and two of the Borneo Class, ideally I would have disposed of all six Borneo's but until replacements can be found they will end their days in the Kongo and Suriname where their age won't matter as much and their size will impress the locals. At present these have been serving as carrier escorts which is a poor choice given their outdated armament. I have not decided what will happen to these ships, scrapping perhaps or a couple might be expended in trials.

As Kirk planned, CV-1 Hund will be decommissioned and scrapped. There will be no dedicated training carrier now, one of the lighter carriers in Home service will undertake that task in peacetime.

Several of the Puttens will be gifted to Saudi Arabia and Yemen to replace their current ten year old fleets. Perhaps 4-6 each.

New Construction
Mainly confined to auxiliary ships (see below), but a small number of K37 and O17 Class subs will be built and I'll probably build a couple more Z94 Class destroyers or enough to fill a division, but four new CLs will be of prime concern as far as warships go. Type undecided, Kirk's delayed Province has merits but I might go for something else. Work on these cruisers might begin in Q1/45. The F-46 Class might be continued but I may design a replacement class. The shortage of frigates is worrying given the age of the current escort fleet.

Auxiliary Ships
The Dutch Navy has a woeful lack of support ships.
The current plan is:

6x Belgian conversions, split undecided between tenders and repair ships, most likely 2x repair ships, 1x sub tender and 3x DD tenders. I've yet to work out which ships Kirk brought etc. and likely refits.
6x Antares Class Tankers from Q1/45
2x Poolster Class Fleet Tankers from Q4/44 and Q2/45
1x Cornelius Drebbel Class Replenishment Ship from Q4/44
2x Submarine Tenders from 1946
2x DD Tenders from 1946
16x tugs (6 home, 6 DEI, 2 Kongo, 2 Suriname)
1-2x survey ships from 1945
1-2x diving tenders

I have some preliminary SS reports for the Antares, Poolster and Drebbel classes, the tankers are heavily based off Brockpaine's designs since I generally suck at simming tankers well so I don't forsee many serious errors.

I think its a good program, and addresses many of the deficiencies facing the Netherlands Navy. The auxiliary designs look good to me.

If the Neterlands receives two of the Belgian Wandelaars, they will be rebuilt to all-oil firing standard and equipped with modern Dutch AA weapons.
As commerce protection cruisers they offer decent firepower to combat converted merchant raiders and have ample AA defence. Also, now the speed has improved they should be able to screen escorts and some slower battle formations if necessary. As an overseas type in the Caribbean or off Kongo, they would do well and anything is better than the old Sumatras which are past their sell-by date.

This also previews a Belgian conversion to oil, though that will have different secondaries etc.

If nine Belgian DD-1 Class are transferred to the Dutch, they will replace the old Z44 class and will be armed as lighter AA/ A/S escort destroyers rather than fleet types. At 534 tons a rebuild, these relatively young hulls would make an excellent bargain as much of the Dutch destroyer fleet is rapidly approaching obsolescence.

If Belgium is considering selling Quatre Journees class ships, France might be willing to buy some of them instead of the Dutch.

Kirk posted several SLEPs in his 1944 reports but no revised SS reports ever emerged, so based on what he did here are my SS reports which should match in all the essentials of the work done (though the Breda does not quite reach the light displacement Kirk quoted)

Thoughts now turn towards a new cruiser.
I quite like the Breda's and my first thoughts were to modernise the design and fit the planned armament of Kirk's Province Class Province Class. However more elements of the Province have crept in and the design is now roughly the same but 1kt slower and I feel this is generally superior to Kirk's design which lacked misc weight for all the amenities and the turrets. I feel this is about the best likely to be achieved on a good balance, but I may tinker more before laying these down.

Such things happen... :)

Looks reasonable to me, though the having 115mm DP guns backing up 152mm DP guns seems rather wasteful. Any doctrinal reasons why you chose not to eliminate the secondary battery and increase the 57mm battery?

I found the trouble, SS knocked out my entered shell weights and when I reloaded it, it used standard shell weights and when I corrected them before posting it knocked the ship to 0.99.

I might indeed use a 90mm battery as on Kirk's Province design. Here is a such a version. It's allowed me to work in a 60mm thick deck. (An all-57mm version is at the bottom of this post)

75 tons growth

Here is an all 57mm version. There is not much between the designs, a little extra range and speed but probably not worth the loss of the 90mm which can use prox-fuse AA shells too.

I should have caught this question earlier - does Point 2 of the Gents' Rules refer to tons light or to tons standard displacement (as Point 1 specifically does)? Read quickly, I would interpret the latter; read thoughtfully I could see interpreting it as the former.

It makes an interesting comparison to a project that I intend to lay down very shortly...

I'd presume it's standard tonnage, not light tonnage. All of the other mentions of differentiation by tonnage in the Gentlemen's Rules specifically call out standard tonnage, and so I presume the trend remains.

On that basis, it would seem that the design's L:B ratio exceeds the allowable parameter.

That's a good catch. I actually simmed these off Kirk's Breda, and indeed looking back at the file, the original Breda breaks the Gentlemen's Rules too (it has the same L:B ratio. There's nothing much we can do about that now.

So I've added 2 metres on the beam and that's sorted things. The L:B is now 9.44:1. Its upped the weight a bit but enabled me to reduce the draught. I've kept the same 0.495 BC, I'm tempted to go for 0.500 but I don't suppose there is much difference and that just piles on extra weight and extra HP and extra machinery weight and the excess hull strength is difficult to use up usefully without things spiralling out of control.

I won't post the SS here yet, since I'll probably tinker further.
