I think it is a bit early for guns of this power. especially that 155mm does stick out ... mine is less powerful and took 2 years and several blown-up guns to develop.

True - and

"13.7mm, 75 caliber
Modified Italian design

Caliber = 0.54 inch (1.37 cm)
Shell weight = 0.28 lbs (0.125 kg)
Muzzle velocity = 1994 fps (608 m/s)

Relative ballistic performance: 0.90

Muzzle energy = 0.023 megajoules = 8.655 foot-tons

Relative muzzle energy: 1.72

Barrel length: 75 calibers "

Isn´t 125g a bit heavy for a 13,7mm shell? This weight reflects only the projectile, not the whole ammo piece!

A ME of 1,72 is truely high,,, One wonders how many shots the barrel will actually survive until it is rendered useless from barrel wear.....?

12

Friday, September 24th 2004, 11:13am

yep, that is one hell of a magnum for the time. 608 m/s is not that fast, but 230g bullet? have a look at the bullet weights for .50 BMG and 14.5mm Russian ....

In general those shell weights seem a little bit high, though... Am I wrong?

14

Using BigGun.exe for armour penetration calculations is a bad idea. It isn't just poor, its bad. The penetration displayed is always best case. All penetrations will be less than that figure.

e.g. 155mm gun penetrates 4" plate at 14000yds. A more realistic figure would be at around 10000yds or less with higher target angles.(inclination of hull and from where the ship is firing.)

Facehard.exe from Nathan Okun is a much better program but more complicated.

IIRC I based the 13.7mm shell weight on Warships1 data.

Quoted

took 2 years and several blown-up guns to develop.

Who's to say a few Filipino guns won't go kablooie? Thanks for the story idea. ;)

In that case, I reckon the data above is non-canonical. :-/ I was using either Warships1 shell weights, or the weights BG suggested for 'WWII' rounded up to the nearest 5 lbs.

RA - thanks for the warning on BG. I guess I'll just declare the data above to be 'non-canonical', and start from scratch.
