Marineschule Mürwik

In the aftermath of Germany’s defeat in the Great War many of the institutions that had stood behind the Imperial Navy were swept away. Among these was the Marineakademie und schule Kiel, the naval academy of the Imperial Navy, which was ordered disbanded by the victorious Allies who saw it as the nest of German militarism at sea. With the much reduced size of German naval forces under the Versailles regime and the large pool of redundant officers to select from, the training of new officers suffered a break until 1923, when the Marineschule Mürwik reopened at Flensburg-Mürwik.

The new academy was planned according to new principles, to serve as a four-year academic and naval school for prospective naval officers. Candidates were required to have completed their secondary education and attained an abitur; admission was to be by competitive examination; upon graduation cadets would receive not only their formal commissions, but a degree in science. The course of study for all cadets would include: aeronautical engineering, chemistry, economics, electrical engineering, foreign languages, general engineering and science, history, mathematics, mechanical engineering, philosophy, physics and political science, in addition to the traditional naval skills of leadership, seamanship and navigation.

Kapitän zur See Werner Tillessen was appointed the first commandant of the new academy, and the first cadets were graduated in 1927.

Marine Kriegsakademie Stralsund

The present naval war college was established in 1932 to train a new generation of officers in command and staff procedures and to prepare leaders for the challenges of operational and strategic leadership over the remainder of their careers as decision makers and problem solvers. The one-year course of study is designed to produce broadly educated leaders who possess a strategic perspective, underpinned by strategic analytical frameworks. Graduates are able to apply disciplined, strategic-minded, critical thinking to challenges in the multiservice and multinational environments. Graduates are also trained to be capable strategic planners. Courses focus on educating the officer in not merely the naval sphere, but in the need for cooperating between naval, land and air forces to achieve desired outcomes on the battlefield.

Approximately fifty serving officers of the Kriegsmarine are selected each year to attend the war college; the first graduating class was that of 1934.

Marinehochschule Parow

The naval officers’ candidate school was established at Parow near Stralsund in 1936 to cater to the need for officers in the expanding Kriegsmarine. Its purpose is to provide officer training opportunities to qualified enlisted personnel and for direct entry of qualified graduates of civilian universities.

The school is open to senior enlisted personnel with at least six but less than twelve years of service who have obtained an abitur or equivalent, and to university graduates holding a diplom. The school provides a concentrated course of instruction covering engineering disciplines, history, naval policy and law, seamanship, navigation and leadership. Upon completion of the course of instruction direct-entry candidates are sent to a specialist naval school for an additional six months of instruction and then commissioned as officers of the reserve. Former enlisted personnel who complete the course of instruction are formally commissioned and reassigned to units of the fleet.
