Grumman F4F Wildcat

Grumman F4F Wildcat, a single-seat carrier-based fighter with a mid-set wing and developed from the earlier family of Grumman fighters. First flown in 1935. Dimensions 38/ 28.9/ 9.2/ 260 sq ft; 1,000hp Pratt & Whitney R-1830-76 radial; max speed 335mph at 21,300ft; service ceiling 39,400ft; range 770 miles; armament four .05in Browning MGs in the wings and two 100lb bombs.

Variants and production figures:

1 XF4F-2 prototype

1 XF4F-3 prototype with a Pratt & Whitney R-1830-76 radial with a two-stage supercharger, first flown in March 1936

78 F4F-3 production aircraft, phased out of service in 1939.

95 F4F-3A with a Pratt & Whitney R-1830-90 with a single-stage supercharger, phased out of service beginning in 1940.

100 F4F-4 with six wing-mounted 0.50in MGs and more armour, delivered from 1939, phased out of service beginning in 1941.

20 F4F-7 long-range photo-reconnaissance with increased fuel, no armament and two ventral cameras, still in service, one squadron based at Midway.
