Low-end Combatants

There has been some discussion recently of less expensive, less-capable warships to fulfill the needs of nations with a smaller purse. That said, I've tried my had at a vessel that reflects my priorities in a destroyer design.

-----------

TBD, TBD Light Destroyer laid down 1945

Displacement: 1,295 t light; 1,345 t standard; 1,501 t normal; 1,625 t full load

Dimensions: Length overall / water x beam x draught

343.42 ft / 334.65 ft x 32.15 ft x 9.84 ft (normal load) [104.67 m / 102.00 m x 9.80 m x 3.00 m]

Armament:

3 - 3.94" / 100 mm guns in single mounts, 30.51lbs / 13.84kg shells, 1945 Model Dual purpose guns in deck mounts with hoists on centreline ends, majority forward, 1 raised mount
4 - 1.57" / 40.0 mm guns (1x4 guns), 1.95lbs / 0.88kg shells, 1945 Model Anti-aircraft guns in deck mount on centreline aft, all raised guns - superfiring
4 - 1.57" / 40.0 mm guns (2x2 guns), 1.95lbs / 0.88kg shells, 1945 Model Anti-aircraft guns in deck mounts on side, evenly spread, all raised mounts
4 - 0.79" / 20.0 mm guns (2x2 guns), 0.24lbs / 0.11kg shells, 1945 Model Anti-aircraft guns in deck mounts on side, evenly spread, all raised mounts
Weight of broadside 108 lbs / 49 kg
Shells per gun, main battery: 300
4 - 21.0" / 533 mm above water torpedoes

Armour:

Gun armour: Face (max) Other gunhouse (avg) Barbette/hoist (max)
Main: 0.98" / 25 mm 0.59" / 15 mm 0.98" / 25 mm
2nd: 0.39" / 10 mm 0.39" / 10 mm -
3rd: 0.39" / 10 mm 0.39" / 10 mm -
4th: 0.39" / 10 mm - -

Conning tower: 0.98" / 25 mm

Machinery:

Oil fired boilers, steam turbines, Geared drive, 2 shafts, 32,667 shp / 24,370 Kw = 33.00 kts
Range 4,500nm at 15.00 kts
Bunker at max displacement = 280 tons

Complement: 119 - 156

Cost: £1.096 million / $4.382 million

Distribution of weights at normal displacement:

Armament: 14 tons, 0.9 %
Armour: 12 tons, 0.8 %
- Belts: 0 tons, 0.0 %
- Torpedo bulkhead: 0 tons, 0.0 %
- Armament: 9 tons, 0.6 %
- Armour Deck: 0 tons, 0.0 %
- Conning Tower: 3 tons, 0.2 %
Machinery: 728 tons, 48.5 %
Hull, fittings & equipment: 517 tons, 34.4 %
Fuel, ammunition & stores: 206 tons, 13.7 %
Miscellaneous weights: 25 tons, 1.7 %

Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:

Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship): 602 lbs / 273 Kg = 19.7 x 3.9 " / 100 mm shells or 0.3 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1.10
Metacentric height 1.1 ft / 0.3 m
Roll period: 13.0 seconds
Steadiness - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 80 %
- Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0.36
Seaboat quality (Average = 1.00): 1.10

Hull form characteristics:

Hull has low quarterdeck and transom stern
Block coefficient: 0.496
Length to Beam Ratio: 10.41: 1
'Natural speed' for length: 20.82 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 70 %
Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 73
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): 22.00 degrees
Stern overhang: 0.82 ft / 0.25 m
Freeboard (% = measuring location as a percentage of overall length):
- Stem: 19.69 ft / 6.00 m
- Forecastle (20 %): 18.37 ft / 5.60 m
- Mid (50 %): 17.06 ft / 5.20 m
- Quarterdeck (22 %): 10.83 ft / 3.30 m (17.06 ft / 5.20 m before break)
- Stern: 10.83 ft / 3.30 m
- Average freeboard: 16.25 ft / 4.95 m
Ship tends to be wet forward

Ship space, strength and comments:

Space - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 166.2 %
- Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 153.9 %
Waterplane Area: 7,427 Square feet or 690 Square metres
Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 84 %
Structure weight / hull surface area: 33 lbs/sq ft or 162 Kg/sq metre
Hull strength (Relative):
- Cross-sectional: 0.51
- Longitudinal: 2.96
- Overall: 0.61
Hull space for machinery, storage, compartmentation is cramped
Room for accommodation and workspaces is excellent
Ship has slow, easy roll, a good, steady gun platform
