Naval Fighters

Fairey Firefly; Developed to N.8/37 as a new carrier-based single-seat fighter. Powered by a RR Griffon V-12 with a fuselage of exceptionally clean appearance to reduce drag and time to 10,00ft is 3 minutes. Armament is four wing-mounted 20mm cannon and two 1,000lb bombs can be fitted beneath the wings. Introduced in 1941, the FN.Mk.II has a Griffon II delivering 2,375hp for 401mph. Greece ordered 100 Mk.II in late 1941. They will replace the Gloster Gannet by 1944. In early 1944 KEA purchased the necessary equipment to upgrade to the Rolls-Royce Griffon III increasing top speed to 405mph.
Dimensions Mk.II; 44ft 6in/ 35ft 11in/ 13ft 5in/ 328 sq ft; 1x 2,410hp Rolls-Royce Griffon III; max speed 405mph at 15,000 feet; range 1,075 miles and service ceiling 30,000ft.

Gloster SS.39 Gannet: developed from 1933 the type entered British service in October 1936 and just one month later 36 were ordered for Greece with a follow-on order for 54 in mid 1938. All should be in service by the end of 1940 aboard the carrier fleet. Armament consists of six 7.92mm Browning belt-fed machine guns in the wings. They will be phased out of service aboard the carriers and used by the Advanced Naval Flight School by 1944, having been replaced by the Fairey Firefly.
