3 November 1943

Quoted

To: CO, Moncao
From: HQ Armada

Following the review of reports from yourself and the inspection dispatched from HQ Far East, and with the Moncao's age and situation in mind, the Armada is declaring Moncao a constructive total loss.

The Armada has rejected the notion of selling Moncao to Chosen or a private scrapyard, noting the possibility that a negative military outcome may cause the ship to fall into Chinese hands. Therefore, you are instructed to:

-Patch the damage necessary to allow for short-term towing
-Destroy all equipment and items considered sensitive
-Muster the crew for evacuation

A squadron including two destroyers, a transport, a tug, and minesweeping assets will steam to your location on 10 November. Moncao will be taken in tow outside Chosenian waters and scuttled by torpedo. Your crew will return with the squadron via transport.

A covering force will be at sea to prevent interference with the operation.

Msg ends.

Here is the voice of Beijing .... again we see the perverse character of the Korean leader. They present us alleged Japanese civilians as victims of our authorized retaliation. We repeat: the attack was done only on exclusively military targets far any civilian facilities. Thus once again we look into the lying face of the koreans. A korean soldier in civilian clothes certainly look similar as a Japanese civilian.

Therefore world ... do not believe on the Korean liars.

30th October - 6th November 1943, Pyongyang, Headquarters of the Armed Forces of Chosen

Weekly combat report no. 15

summary:
The Chinese offensive has finally stalled. Chinese troops were unable to exploit their initial breakthroughs and failed to penetrate our newly established defensive line. Only in the sectors of the IC22 and IC28 the enemies launched serious but unsuccessful attempts to break through our lines.
In all other sectors our troops are retreating as planned while the Chinese move up without putting too much pressure on our troops. Most importantly the frontline in the sector of the 2nd Army was finally straightened, thus IC40 and IC1 are no longer under the threat of encirclement.
Miscellaneous events: IC7 has been reassigned to the 1st Army; MC1 has been reassigned to the 9th Army; IC17/A1 arrived reenforceing the northern front sector.
However, while the Chinese thrust lost some of it's force, the general situation is still very unfavorable for us and the cohesion of our frontline is extremely fragile.

air activity: Limited activity on both sides due to rainy and stormy weather.

The Japanese government has confirmed the reports that 38 advisors and engineers from Japan and working in Chosen were killed in gas attacks launched by the Chinese.

While the Chinese carried out the attack and are to blame for the failure to properly attack a military target, Prime Minister Fumimaro Konoe has taken full reponsibility for the failure by the government to not properly warn Japanese citizens in and near the warzone of the risks and to order the evacuation of those citizens. He offered his resignation to the Empress at noon.

General Tōjō Hideki was appointed to fill the vacant position of Prime Minister while General Sugiyama Hajime took over the the position of Minister of the Army. The new Prime Minister has issued a statement that, in order to prevent an other incident like this from happening, all Japanese citizens currently in China and Chosen are to leave the two nations as soon as possible.

3rd November, Dandong, Headquarters of the Battle Group 'Chulsoon'

During the last week members of the Japanese volunteer brigade conducted recon missions against the Donggang bridgehead to gather informations about the Chinese defences and their composition. These recon operations showed that despite the Chinese invasion force was suprisingly passive after their initial capture of Donggang, they were not deedless.
Instead of immediatly pushing to Dandong the Chinese forces fortified the bridgehead with entrechments, earthen bunkers, barbed wire obstacles and minefields. Moreover the Chinese invasion force was much stronger than expected. The Japanese recon units indentified three enemy Divisions.

5th November, Dandong, Headquarters of the Battle Group 'Chulsoon'

Major General Byon Chulsoon could hear the battle noise from the balcony of his headquarters in the southern suburbs of Dandong. The assault on the Chinese bridgehead was running for 5 hours now. The 1st Infatry Regiment of the Japanese 800th Infantry Brigade as well as three tank companies of the 26th Tank Battalion were comitted. However, if the last reports were correct, only little progress has been made so far.

Suddenly Major Yoon Weon-Kee rushed into the room....

"General Chulsoon, Sir! We have just received the last reports from the 1st Infantry Regiment. It seems like the situation is deteriorating quickly. They are encountering fierce resistance in all sectors. The 3rd Infantry Battalion is still trying to dislodge a Chinese company which is stubbornly defending the airstrip. The 2nd Infantry Battalion with support of two tank Companies is engaging two enemy battalion sized formations which are blocking the highway G201."

Major General Byon Chulsoon interrupted his discomposed subordinate:

"Well, I never alleged that this battle is going to be a picknick. The Chinese forces are strong but they don't stand a chance against our well trained Japanese comrades."

"Ehh...Sir, I was not finished yet. We have a serious problem on the southeastern flank. The soldiers of the 1st Infantry Battalion were pinned down by heavy Chinese artillery fire and got seperated from the 6th Tank Company which they were supposed to support.
Unfortunately the 6th Tank Company continued its advance as planned. They got ambushed by Chinese AT-guns and their withdrawal route was cut off by an enemy infantry company.
They already lost four of their heavy tanks. 1st Infantry Battallion is trying to link up with them again but is also taking heavy casualties. The commander of the 1st Infantry Regiment is requesting that the reserve elements are released to prevent a debacle."

6th Tank Company was ambushed...

Type 2 tanks destroyed in a Chinese ambush...Today the Chinese proved that even state of the art tanks from Japan are not indestructible. These three tanks of the 4th Platoon / 6th Tank Company fell victim to massive 75mm fire from Chinese anti tank guns opening up at point blank range. Despite that, the platoon took out several of the well concealed AT-guns before it was eventually destroyed.

OPERATION 'HAMMER' 301043 - 061143
Beijing - Headquarters of the Armed Forces of China

Army Group Dalian:
general situation:
Koreans stabilize their front and fasten the front line between Zhuanghe and Shijiajiezhen. Our offensive will be slowed down a little, since the refresh of ammunition and other supplies takes longer than expected.

Army Group West:
general Situation:
The front is currently still in the suburbs of Xiuyan, a regrouping of local units has been completed and the attack / the liberation of the town is imminent.

Army Group Centre:
general situation:
Unfortunately, even here our advance was stopped by the Koreans. Even the heaviest losses on the part of the enemy are not cause for disintegration of military units. In order to avoid unnecessary losses in our armed forces, a supply break has been started. Once all units are replenished, even here, the advance is resumed.

Army Group East:
general Situation:
Koreans pull back slowly but steadily.

Battle Group 'Donggang':
general situation:
The bridge head is bursting at the virtually seams, more supplies and troops were landed. Start of Operation "Torch" (breakout from the bridgehead) is imminent. But unfortunately, the enemy launched just before our attack began an offensive to clean up the beachhead, thus there are currently first heavy fightings around Donggang.

Air Activity:
general situation:
Heavy rain and the onset of snowfall in the mountains extremely limits the flight activities. Some of the sporadic-built airfields are out of service through the soggy ground and therefore is no air operation possible.

5th November, Dandong, Battle Group 'Chulsoon'

The 6th Tank Company was cut off and under heavy fire. Retreat was impossible as the killzone in which the 4th Platoon already got destroyed was prohibiting any retreat movement.
The three remaining platoons, 13 tanks in total, were engaged from both sides of the road. Company commander Okubo Utemaro ordered the 2nd Platoon, which was on point, to push through the ambush.
After tank 1 of the 2nd Platoon had moved 100m forward it was struck by an anti tank mine, killing the driver and leaving the tank immobilized.

The Japanese tanks, which could neither go forward nor go back, tried to suppress assumed Chinese positions with machine gun fire and HE-shells. Chinese anti-tank guns were firing accurately at the Type 2 tanks but the 50mm shells were just bouncing off from their impressive armor without causing significant damage. However, two tanks got eventually damaged and were immobilized.

After one and a half hour of heavy fighting, tank 3 of the 1st Platoon suddenly blew up in a huge fireball. Okubo Utemaro realized that the Chinese must have brought their 75mm AT-guns into position which could penetrate the side and rear armor of the Type 2.

When another tank got disabled by several 75mm hits, Okubo Utemaro knew that his company was doomed if he did not react quickly. "All or nothing" he said to himself and ordered all tanks which still were combat effective (8x Type 2) to turn right and assault the Chinese ambush positions head on.

The Chinese infantry which was dug in along the road did not anticipate such a daring maneuver and when they saw the terrifying Type 2 tanks charging forward firing with cannon and machine guns, they started to panick.

Okubo Utemaros tanks destroyed several Chinese AT-guns and stunned the Chinese infantry, however four additional tanks were disabled by AT-guns and AT-mines.
Another Type 2 tank was destroyed when Utemaros company, or what was left of it, tried to cross the railroad in order the reach friendly positions.

Destroyed Type 2 tanks of the 6th Company

Just before sunset the last three remaining Type 2 tanks of the 6th Company linked up with friendly forces at the highway G201. 13 destroyed or disabled tanks were left behind. Captain Okubo Utemaro and his crew survived with minor injuries, their tank however was almost damaged beyond repair. They counted 17x 50mm hits of which none penetrated, 5x 75mm hits of which one partially penetrated and dozens of AT-Rifle hits.

Hwang Lee-Moon (minister of defence): "Good afternoon Admiral, come in and sit down please."

Admiral Kim Weon-Kee: "Yes, yes, thanks. I just wanted to notify you in person about the news I got from Osaka."

Hwang Lee-Moon: "Very well. I assumed everything went fine?"

Admiral Kim Weon-Kee: "Yes, everything went as planned. The RCN Chosen arrived in Osaka this morning. Most of the crew has already left the ship. The Japanese are taking over..."

Hwang Lee-Moon: "Glad to hear that."

Admiral Kim Weon-Kee: "Yes, well, I mean....I still don't know if it was the right decision. I mean it was our only CV and we won't be able to get another one in the near future..."

Hwang Lee-Moon: "You are a seafarer, so can understand that you don't like the fact that we are giving this mighty ship away. But you know the circumstances yourself. We can't support it. Hell, we don't even have carrier based planes, it is just a big target for Chinese bombers, a target which is eating up our valuable resources. The submarines we get in exchange are much more useful in our war than this floating pile of junk ever could be."

Admiral Kim Weon-Kee: "Yes, you are right, I just have to get used to it. Submarines are not the most imposing vessels."

Hwang Lee-Moon: "I think the crews of the sunken Chinese freighters would disagree with you."

"This is a worrying development." said Yibo Yunsheng to his adjutant. On the coffee table in front of him a stack of large-format photos was lying, clearly showing the Korean carrier in the Bay of Osaka.

"What are the damned Koreans already planning again ?" his adjutant asked.

"It's obvious." Yunsheng answered. "They can't do anything with the carrier, and so they have certainly bartered it to the Japs. They sure have made a horse trading with them. Damned !! Unfortunately we can now delete the carrier from the target list of 'Operation Torch', because it is no longer stationed at the naval base of Busan. Hopefully the weather will soon get better so we can start the operation." After a short break he continues "I urgently need the latest pictures of the Korean naval bases. So send again some long range reconnaissance flights."

From the memoirs of Lieutenant General Choi Dae-Du "Decisive battles in the first Sino-Chosen war" (published 1962)

Chapter VIII: The second battle of Fengcheng

After more than four weeks of chaotic retreats our troops finally managed to establish a new defensive line and we were able to stabalize the front to some degree.
At this point it almost looked like the Chinese counteroffensive had gone out of steam. After the costly fightings during the past weeks we hoped that the Chinese supreme command would be satisfied with their recent successes and not prolong their offensive into the onset of winter. Unfortunately this was wishful thinking on our side.

In the early morning of the 10th November two Chinese tank divisions as well as three infantry divisions launched an assault on our positions a few kilometers north of Fengcheng. Fengcheng was defended by two divisions of the 28th Infantry Corps. The 28th Infantry Corps had been weakened during the battles of the last month. Due to the fact that the Fengcheng area saw little combat during the first week of November, the Corps had used the time to build up a decent defensive line with trench-networks and pillboxes. First snow fell on the 4th November and the temperature dropped to -5° C.[...]

Chosenian sentries of the Rifle Division No. 45 are reporting 40-50 Chinese MT-25 tanks forming up.

From the memoirs of Lieutenant General Choi Dae-Du "Decisive battles in the first Sino-Chosen war" (published 1962)

Chapter VIII: The second battle of Fengcheng

[...] The first engagements on the 10th and 11th of November in the Fengcheng area were just Chinese force recon operations which probed our defence lines to search for weak spots. With five individual recon groups, each consisting out of several armored recce vehicles and about 40 to 70 infantrymen the Chinese poked our defences in order to spot machine gun nests and AT-gun emplacements. The Chosenian officers in the field were however smart enough not to reveal the positions of the few and valuable AT-guns. Instead, they held fire until the Chinese recon forces were close and then suddenly opened up with small arms and heavy machine guns. From close range the HMGs proved to be very effective against the lightly armored Chinese reconaissance vehicles.[...]

A platoon of Liébáo II armored cars is advacing on the CHosenian positions. The Chosenian soldiers however maintain fire discipline...

...until the Chinese are only 150m away. Then every soldier opens up and soon the first Liébáos go up in flames after beeing hit by salvos of 12.7mm heavy machine guns.

Some Chinese crews begin to panick as smalls arms fire is bouncing of their vehicles and thus they try to abandon their armored cars.

12th November 1943, "Flying Dragon" Squadron

The Japanese pilots were very eager to prove their abilities in actual combat and therefore after just two days of orientation flights the Chosen supreme command assigned them a first combat mission. A mission however which was not appreciated by the proud Ki-100 pilots, who hoped to shoot down some Chinese fighters in aerial combat as soon as possible. Instead the Chosen supreme command wanted them to act as fighter-bombers and harass the Chinese military traffic along the G11 coastal highway 30km west of Zhuanghe.
For this mission each of the participating 24x Ki-100 would be fitted with 250 kg bombs under the wings.
As soon as the first flight of 8x Ki-100 reached the target area they spotted several enemy vehicle columns. After the Chosen airforce had been passive for the last few weeks, the Chinese were rather careless about their airdefenses and the crews of the few AA guns mistook the approaching planes for friendlies...at least until the first 250 kg bombs hit nearby.

One 250 kg bomb hits directly in the center of an enemy truck column and creates havoc.

After the bombs have been dropped, the brave Japanese pilots begin their gun runs.

Chinese anti aircraft guns are engaging the overpassing fighters...

...but too late, dozens of Chinese trucks and vehicles are already burning. A great victory for Chosen and its allies. "Nippon Banzai!"
