1944 Les chevaliers du ciel

Les chevaliers du ciel

The Armee de l'Aire would like to formally invite the nations of the world to attend the second biennial Les chevaliers du ciel gathering in France. This event will be open to sixteen teams (or more, if the response is high enough) as a gathering of talented military pilots.

Overview:
Each country can send only one team, consisting of four to six pilots, who will be scored as a team for a variety of events. These events will be held in three stages, each held in different venues across France. Scoring will emphasize teamwork and training of the pilots

- Stage One: Held at Salon-de-Provence Air Base, July 8-9. Consists of an offshore course of pylons between Marseilles and Toulon. The team will set a measured speed prior to the race, and will then try to complete the circuit as close as possible to that average speed.
- Stage Two: Held at Dijon Air Base, July 10-11. Pilots will receive a measured quantity of ammunition, and will shoot at a towed target sleeve. The team will receive points based on the percentage of hits on the target sleeve.
- Stage Three: Held at Vélizy-Villacoublay Air Base (near Paris), July 12-13. This consists of an aerobatic competition to be judged by a panel of twelve observers selected by lot.
- Stage Four: Held at Vélizy-Villacoublay Air Base (near Paris), July 14. Special airfield open house for Bastille Day.

Requirements:
- All planes must be in regular service with the country of origin's air force; all pilots must be employed as active-duty military pilots.
- A minimum of four and maximum of six planes and pilots can be entered. If a plane breaks down, then one substitute aircraft is allowed so long as the pilot list remains the same.
- All planes must have at least one machine gun (for stage two).
- Planes must have two engines or fewer, and a maximum of two crewmen.

Notes:
Although modern fighter aircraft are presumed, the nature of the competition means that advanced fighter trainers are not going to be disadvantaged in scoring.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.
