Despite the onset of winter demonstrators continue their protests before the Italian legation, demanding an Italian withdrawal from the so-called Occupied Territories of Dalmatia and Slovenia. The protesters, seemingly operating in relays, have included university students, factory workers, farmers and even ordinary house-wives. The authorities have detailed police to assure that the protests remain peaceful, but to date there have been no incidents. Comments from the Foreign Office indicate that Government remains committed to the maintenance of the status quo, while indicating that it would enter into discussions on the subject should the Italian Government indicate its desire to do so.

The oceanographic research ship Pelikan recently visited the Antarctic continent on its extended voyage, and the latest newsreel taken on her voyage focuses on the fauna observed during its cruise along the Antarctic Peninsula. See in dramatic detail were the struggles of whales to escape the clutches of whalers, the frolicking of seals on the shores and nearby waters, the antics of the many penguins that inhabit the rookeries of the region and the many varieties of great birds that feed upon the sea life of the cold Antarctic Ocean. The public has reacted favorably to the newsreels shot aboard the Pelikan and they have heightened the awareness of the nation of its many connections to the sea.

Yugoslav News and Events - December 1943 - Fifth Tranche

United Press International, Belgrade, Saturday, 25 December 1943

Traditional Christmas observances were held today among the demonstrators gathered outside the Italian legation here. These hardy souls have braved the cold Yugoslav winter to maintain their vigil, and continue call upon Italy to withdraw from what they see as occupied territory in Dalmatia and Slovenia. The demonstrators have been here for a month now, and while there appears to be little overt support for them from the Yugoslav Government, sympathy demonstrations have occurred in several of the nations largest cities. The protesters vow to maintain their vigil until Italy departs from its trans-Adriatic provinces an event held to be quite unlikely by most informed diplomats but it remains to be seen if their resolve can outlast a winter which has already brought snow and freezing rain to Belgrade.
