Debate opened today in Parliament on the subject of naval construction plan for the forthcoming year. Several members, supported in public by the Navy League, have put forth the proposal to construct two new light cruisers, while the Admiralty staff has recommended to the Government that funds be set aside for improvement of the nation’s naval infrastructure. A decision is not expected before October however.

With the conversion of No.76 (Bomber) Squadron at Ponikve Air Base to the Soko Zmaj twin engine light bomber, the German-built Dornier Do.17K has been withdrawn from front-line service with the Royal Yugoslav Air Force. The surviving aircraft will be used as ground-instruction machines for mechanic-apprentices at training centres. The Do.17 has given excellent service since its introduction in the middle 1930s, but has been rendered obsolete through the rapid development of aircraft design in the last several years.

Today the Adriatic Shipyards launched the fifth and sixth examples of the Project 1942 Theta escort sloops, which are expected to complete early next year. It is believed that they will be followed with a further pair, construction of which will likely start within the next few months.

The Soko Aircraft Company has announced that it will support a sales demonstration tour of its products this summer, featuring a company-funded demonstrator of its new Orao single-engine fighter. A company spokesman hinted that discussions were under way with fellow members of the Warsaw Pact, including Turkey and Poland, for scheduling such a tour. Bulgaria has already evinced interest in the Orao and is preparing to undertake its licence production.

Much activity was seen in the Adriatic Shipyards complex today with the completion and commissioning of the second of the four Project 1943 Epsilon netlayers. Constructed under the name Netlayer B, the new vessel was christened Bizon upon her formal acceptance by the Royal Yugoslav Navy. She will embark immediately upon her trials and initial working up. Her lead-ship sister, Mazga, completed her working up the same day and has taken up her duties in the harbour defenses of Bar.

The cinemas of the capital and other major cities included in their fare another newsreel sent from the decks of the research ship Pelikan. The floating oceanographic research laboratory is presently exploring the sea life of the Red Sea and the varied cultures that touch its waters. The current presentation focuses upon the port of Suakin, once known to the Roman Ptolemy as Limen Evangelis, the Port of Good Hope. Long ago a prosperous port city, Suakin has since been eclipsed by Port Sudan, but still offers the visitor a glimpse of life from earlier centuries, and the offshore coral islets teem with exotic sea life.

No.107 Squadron of the Royal Yugoslav Air Force has been reformed at Zeljava Air Base, Bihac, as a fighter-reconnaissance unit equipped with camera-equipped Soko Jastreb aircraft. The unit had previously served as a corps reconnaissance unit flying the Ikarus IK-2.

Her sister, Destroyer Leader B, is nearing completion and her formal commissioning is expected some time next month.

The Defence Ministry has affirmed the sale of armoured vehicles to the Syrian Government. The contract covers the supply of eighteen LT.38 light tanks, six AT.41 anti-tank vehicles and two RV.40 salvage vehicles; these will be used to partially equip a light armoured battalion of the Syrian Army. Deliveries are expected to commence some time in late September.

Despite the apparent lack of success thus far, officials of the Soko aircraft firm here say that they are please by the reception given to the company’s demonstration team on their recent visits to Warsaw, Bucharest and Athens. While the Orao fighter aircraft has performed superbly, it has yet to garner international sales beyond the licence agreement concluded months ago with Bulgaria. The demonstration team is expected to visit Ankara in the coming weeks, and it is hoped that the Turkish Air Force can be persuaded to consider the Orao as a replacement for their older Heinkel interceptors.

Focusing on its recent visits to Djibouti, Berbera and Aden, the film documents the continuance of traditional life amid with modern age. The colour footage includes scenes of native dances in Berbera as well as the continued use of sailing craft by the inhabitants.

In an unexpected move the Royal Hellenic Air Force announced today that it would order forty examples for the Yugoslav-built Soko Orao single-engine fighter aircraft to supplement its existing inventory. The order marks the first substantial export order of combat aircraft for the Yugoslav manufacturer, and indicates that the Greek military is considering diversifying its procurement policies. An air force spokesman declined to indicate when the first examples of the new fighter would be received but suggested that the entire order would be received within the upcoming year.

The Defence Ministry has confirmed the award of a production contract for the LT.43 Light Tank to the Jasenica Equipment and Machinery Company. It covers the manufacture of an initial quantity of two hundred vehicles, which are intended to replace the LT.38 light tanks used by the armoured cavalry regiments of the Royal Yugoslav Army.

The last example of the license-built Skoda 6ST heavy lorry rolled off the assembly line of the Zastava Ordnance Works today, the 850th unit to be delivered by the factory to the Royal Yugoslav Army. The plant will now concentrate on serial manufacture of its M.40 field car and M.41 all-wheel drive lorry.

The first batch of LT.38 light tanks and other armoured vehicles ordered by the Syrian Army left the port of Bar today aboard the freighter Drava, bound for the port of Latakia. The remaining vehicles are expected to be shipped next month.
